This study aims at investigating the implications of SEL for art education from the perspective of multicultural
education by analyzing the literatures related to SEL in Korea. The total number of 47 articles in
the period of 2004∼2017 are collected. and ‘사회정서학습’, ‘SEL', 'Social Emotional Learning' are used as
the keywords in order to search for related articles on various databases such as the National Assembly
Library, Riss, DBPIA, KISS, Kyobo Scholar, and Newnonmoon. The main contents of this study are
threefold. First, the legislative ground of SEL is discussed in association with the trend of character education
shedding light on the societal meanings of SEL. Second, the meta-analysis of SEL literatures is conducted
in order to examine the validity and efficiency of SEL within the context of Korea. In addition, the
articles that specifically deal with the SEL programs integrated into school subjects are analyzed so as to
figure out how SEL can be linked to different subjects. Third, the meaning of SEL for multicultural art education
is explored in an attempt to lay the ground for further discourses and experiments of SEL in art
education.
