본 연구는 학생 스스로 전공명, 전공의 목표, 교육과정, 최종성과물 등을 설계하여 이수하는 학생설계전공(Student-Designed Major)의 의미와 가치를 알고 기존 교육과정에 주는 함의를 도출하고자 수행되었다. 학생설계전공은 국외 대학으로는 워싱턴대 학교, 브라운대학교, 코넬대학교, 뉴욕대학교 등에서, 국내 대학으로는 서강대학교, 서울대학교 자유전공학부, 중앙대학교, 이화여자대학교 등에서 운영 중이다. 각 대학 및 이수하는 학생에 따라 조금씩 다른 목표와 형태로 운영되지만 무엇을, 왜 공부해야하는지부터 실행방법에 이르기까지 학생 스스로 결정하고 이행한다는 기본 틀은 같다. 학생설계전공은 교육의 형식과 내용 모두에서 자기주도적 학습을 가능케 하는 제도로 다양성과 개방성이 두드러진 문화·예술분야에서 더욱 활용 가치가 높다. 국내외 사례를 분석한 결과 문화·예술과 융합한 학생설계전공은 크게 소통과 공익을 위한 전공, 과학 기술과 융합한 전공, 경영학과 융합한 전공으로 나누어 볼 수 있었다. 이러한 학생설계전공은 학생들의 관심과 이를 진행하는 과정에 관한 실질적인 정보를 제공하여 문화·예술교육과정의 확장 및 심화에 기여할 것으로 기대할 수 있다.
By looking at the specific examples, the present study examined the meanings, the values, and the implications of student-designed major in which students themselves plan their own name, purpose, curriculum, and final project of the major. Student-designed major leads students to genuine self-directed learning, especially in the art & culture area where diversity and openness are important. The specific cases of the student-designed major combined with art & culture were categorized into one pursuing the greater good, one combined with science, and the one combined with business administration. By observing what students want and the process of progress, student-designed major is expected to expand and improve the art & culture curriculum.
