The purpose of the study is to analyze writing activities of elementary English textbooks with
regard to its types and elements of creative education and to examine students’ perceptions on
them. For this, three English textbooks for 5th and 6th graders were selected and their writing
activities were analyzed. In addition, questionnaires were administered to the 6th graders who were
using each textbook. The results of the study were as follows. First, it was shown that more than
half of the writing activities in the textbooks was the controlled type, about one third the guided,
and less than one tenth the free. It was also found that the students perceived the guided or free
writing activities difficult compared to the controlled one but useful for their learning. Second, the
majority of the students perceived that the writing activities in the textbooks are not difficult and
their most preferred writing type was copying, one of the controlled writing, and the second
preferred one was the free writing. Third,, the elements of creative education were found in some
of the writing activities, but only in the guided and free writing activities. On the other hand,
many students perceived the writing activities that have the elements of creative education to the
ones which don’t have and useful for their learning. Based on these findings, several suggestions
were made.
