Purpose : Bio-glass proved to be grafting substitute material, providing a reasonable bio-degradation time, and no need
for harvesting procedure. The purpose of this study is to evaluate application of Bio-glass as a bone graft material
for grafting procedure.
Material & Method : Sixteen rabbits were divided into 4 groups of 4 periods. The autogenous bone and Bio-glass
were grafted in rabbit cranial defects. The rabbits were sacrificed at 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks, and the histologic and
immunohistochemical analyses were used to investigate bone regeneration phase.
Result :
1. The new bone formation around autogenous bone and Bio-glass was seen from 2 weeks, but Bio-glass part was
not seen incremented for each period.
2. In autogeneous bone graft,BMP 2/4/7 expression was most increased at 4 weeks.
3. In Bio-glass graft, BMP 2/4/7 expression was most increased at 12 weeks.
Conclusion : We considered that bio-blass cannot be a suitable material for grafting and augmentation at defected area,
and further study will be needed.
