제철유물에 대한 금속분석 연구는 유적의 성격을 파악하는 데 주요한 조사연구법일 뿐만 아니라 전통제철기술의 연구와 복원을 위해서도 필수적인 요건으로 자리 잡았다. 30여 년간의 연구사를 거치면서 나름대로 새로운 분석법과 해석기법이 나타나고는 있지만 많은 문제점이 개선되지 않고 있는 것 또한 사실이다. 본고에서는 1980년대부터 실시되어온 제철유물의 금속분석 현황을 살펴보고, 그 방법과 결과 해석 등에 많은 문제점이 있음을 지적하였다. 구체적으로는 고고학연구자 및 금속분석자들의 제철에 대한 개념과 사용 용어가 서로 달라 혼선을 빚는 점, 금속분석자간 분석방법이 상이하여 비교검토가 어려운점, 분석결과에 대한 분석자간의 큰 해석차, 분석결과의 불충분한 공유 상황, 불균일한 분석비용 등 제반 문제점들에 대해 논하였다. 이에 대한 개선 및 고고학과 금속분석학의 효율적 융·복합 연구체제의 조성을 위한 방안으로는 제철유물의 계획적이고 체계적인 금속학적 분석, 분석방법 및 결과해석의 일관성 혹은 최소한의 기준틀 마련, 제철유물뿐만 아니라 철기 출토품으로의 분석 확대, 제철복원실험 시료분석과 유적출토 시료분석의 교차활용, 발굴자와 분석자 및 분석자간 협업, 연구시스템의 다양화 등 일곱 가지를 제시하였다. 이를 통해 우리 소중한 겨레문화인 전통제철기술의 복원을 위해 현행 문제점들이 조속히 개선되도록 다양하고 적극적인 노력들이 이어지길 기대한다.
Metallurgical analysis of the iron artifacts is not only the important method to verify the traits of archaeological site, but also the indespensable method to research and to reconstruct the traditional technology of iron making. It is real that the problems are not to be improved, inspite of the appearance of new methods of analysis and interpretation for the research history of 30 years. In this thesis we investigated the situations of the metallurgical analysis of the iron artifacts from 1980, and pointed that there are many problemes in the field of the results and interpretations. we discussed many torics as follows : 1. confusion of the concepts and definitions between the archaeologists and researchers of the metal analysis, 2. difficulties to compare each other between the analysts of iron making derived from the different analysis method, 3. difference of the interpretation about the results of the analysis, 4. insufficent sharing of the resulte of analysis, 5. unbalanced fee of analysis etc. To improve and to make a efficent interdiciplinary research system between archaeology and metallurgy, we suggested the seven points as follows : 1. planned and systematic metallurgical analysis, 2. consistency of analysis method and interpretation of research results, 3. preparing a minimum standard, 4. expansion of analysis not only iron making artifacts but also iron artifacts, 5. using the data of iron making experiment together with the material of iron making sites, 6. cooperation not only between excavater and analyzer but also between analyzers each other, 7. diversity of research system. We hope that to reconstruct the traditional iron making technology, it must be continued to make efforts actively to improve the current problems.
