Metallurgical analysis of the iron artifacts is not only the important method to verify the traits of archaeological site, but also the indespensable method to research and to reconstruct the traditional technology of iron making. It is real that the problems are not to be improved, inspite of the appearance of new methods of analysis and interpretation for the research history of 30 years.
In this thesis we investigated the situations of the metallurgical analysis of the iron artifacts from 1980, and pointed that there are many problemes in the field of the results and interpretations. we discussed many torics as follows : 1. confusion of the concepts and definitions between the archaeologists and researchers of the metal analysis, 2. difficulties to compare each other between the analysts of iron making derived from the different analysis method, 3. difference of the interpretation about the results of the analysis, 4. insufficent sharing of the resulte of analysis, 5. unbalanced fee of analysis etc.
To improve and to make a efficent interdiciplinary research system between archaeology and metallurgy, we suggested the seven points as follows : 1. planned and systematic metallurgical analysis, 2. consistency of analysis method and interpretation of research results, 3. preparing a minimum standard, 4. expansion of analysis not only iron making artifacts but also iron artifacts, 5. using the data of iron making experiment together with the material of iron making sites, 6. cooperation not only between excavater and analyzer but also between analyzers each other, 7. diversity of research system.
We hope that to reconstruct the traditional iron making technology, it must be continued to make efforts actively to improve the current problems.
