The purpose of this study is to seek a way to the meaning of 'looking' through the psychoanalytic approach as the meaning making of socio-cultural identity as well as psychological characteristics of human being. The researcher examines the unconscious desires inherent in image production and appreciation, and focuses on the politics of identity surrounding them, and examines the tendency of art to emphasize the value of social justice and social participation including feminism. The research analyzes the examples of socially engaged art pursuing practical change and definition of society, and examines how the values that respect each other and cultural diversity are symbolized and communicated with people. The research recognizes the possibility of a new approach to art education through discussing art works as diverse social activities including Krzysztof Wodiczko.
