This study aims to identify how deeply university students understand sign language, a means of communication for the hearing impaired and to figure out the ways to support the university life of the hearing impaired students. For these purposes, this study sur-veyed consciousness of university students on sigh language through intensive inter-views with 210 university students who are studying in colleges in the downtown of Seoul. Most university students didn t fully understand the hearing impaired. In particu-lar, they consider the sign language as beautiful language but lack overall interests on the sign language. This study also found that while the students intend to learn or will learn the sign language in future, they think the sign language is not useful because they don t have any opportunity to use it as well as it is difficult to meet the hearing impaired. Additionally, they considered the hearing impaired as people that are pitiful and difficult to approach. Then, they emphasized the distribution of sign language and active promo-tion through mass media to understand and communicate together with the hearing impaired. Meanwhile, it is required to support interpretation or shorthand writing of sign language for university life and learning of the hearing impaired.
