The purpose of this study was to descriptive levels of spirituality, compassionate care, resilience, and terminal care stress for nurses in Intensive care units(ICUs) and to identify the relationship between variables. As a method, descriptive correlation design was applied with self-reported questionaires among 164 nurses working in the ICUs in a university affiliated tertiary hospital in Seoul, Korea. These nurses agreed to voluntarily participate in the study from June 27 to July 23, 2019 when the data was collected. Spirituality, compassionate care, resilience, and terminal care stress were surveyed using self-report questionnaires. The data was analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé test and Pearson’s correlation analysis using the SPSS / WIN 22.0 program.
The research results are as follows. Spirituality was 3.78 out of 6 points, compassionate care was 3.59 out of 5 points, resilience was 3.46 out of 4 points, and terminal care stress was 3.74 out of 5 points. There was a positive correlation between the following variables: Spirituality and compassionate care (r=.650, p <.001),
spirituality and resilience (r=.694, p <.001), compassionate care and resilience (r=.663, p <.001). There was a negative correlation between the following variables: Spirituality and terminal care stress (r=-.250, p =.001), compassionate care and terminal care stress (r=-.273, p <.001), resilience and terminal care stress (r=-.198, p =.011). Based on the above results, the relationship between spirituality, compassionate care, resilience and terminal care stress of nurses in intensive care units showed that the higher the three former variables were the lower the terminal care stress was. Therefore, in order to reduce the terminal care stress of nurses in intensive care units, an intervention program considering this relationship has been determined to be necessary. Endurance nursing stress is expected to be lowered through the development of intensive care units for nurse s spirituality, compassionate care, and educational programs to improve resilience.
