The purpose of this study is to suggest new contents that can be used for education about the Korean history of human rights having its significance as part of human rights education. Particularly, even though the 1950’s was a crucial era in terms of the Korean history of human rights but has been neglected as a gap for nothing, this study selected Hope, one of the popular magazines of the time, as its text and examined the situations of human rights in the 1950’s and its educational value as well. First, with the text, it was possible to find out articles about human rights from the national dimension and also those showing the people’s awareness about human rights. In the circumstances that put the country into crisis, the government aggressively used human rights discourse to persuade the people about the necessity of the war and also mobilize them for it. Also, right after the war, it employed human rights discourse to establish national order. Meanwhile, the people experience misunderstanding or mistake as they arbitrarily interpret and apply the sign of human rights that they were exposed through government policy or the press without receiving any education on human right. But, awareness of human rights could be confirmed through practice of leading people of the society or men of religion who had taken care of children of mixed blood or people with Hansen’s disease placed in the most vulnerable conditions in 1950’s. While it causes misunderstanding that religious education and rights on human right pursue educational goals confronting to each other, practice and understanding on human dignity pursued by religious education is not different from the goal of education on human rights. Education on human right should be expanded more nowadays when the cheapening of human life is a widespread trend, and educational data should be discovered more diversely. Socio-cultural text like a magazine Hope not only makes us experience historical projection but also is a text that can lead in-depth discussion on practice and establishment of proper human right in the complicated social and political situation. Accordingly, it can serve a text useful in the field of education.
