The remains of Yoon Ji-chung, Kwon Sang-yeon, and Yoon Ji-heon, who had been martyred during the Catholic Persecution of 1791 and 1801 (Sinhae and Sinyu), were found in Chonam-ri (formerly Jenam-ri) of Wanju-gun in Jeollabuk-do Province in March 2021. Although the martyrs of the Catholic Persecution of 1801, including Yoo Hang-geom, who had been buried there were transferred to the Chimyeongjasan Holy Ground of Jeonju in 1914, it had been said that the site was home to other martyr graves. The additional discovery of the remains of the martyrs of the Catholic Persecution of 1801 adds weight to this view. There is the possibility that more undiscovered martyr graves may be present in the area of Chonam-ri. However, the location of the graves where the martyrs of the Catholic Persecution of 1801 (including Yoo Hang-geom) were buried originally has been forgotten, and it is not easy to determine the location of small tombs in such a vast area. This study extended the scope and method of examination and conducted both an investigation of cadastral maps produced during the period of Japanese occupation and the analysis of locations. The results of analysis have newly confirmed that the owner of the land where Yoo Hang-geom had been buried prior to relocation and the owner of the land where the remains of Yoon Ji-chung was found were actually the same person. Through this, it is possible to consider the possibility that the Japanese farm in that area had originally been owned by Yoo Hang-geom’s family. Moreover, according to the results of conducting location analysis using as variables the characteristics of the graveyard where Yoon Ji-chung and others were found, the general locations of Joseon tombs, and also the location characteristics of the martyr graves that have been passed down, it was possible to establish that there is a great possibility that the hilly area around Baubaegi had been used as the graveyard for the martyrs of the Catholic Persecution of 1801.
