Students in general education secondary classes are required to understand and remember overall and related concepts in a variety of content areas presented via lecture and textbook. Students with learning disabilities (LD) experience difficulty in identifying important information presented as well as organizing information in ways that help seem how these related concepts are related. Graphic organizers (GO’s) are one type of instructional tool that helps these students understand larger bodies of information by providing a visual "picture" of how related facts and concepts fit together. This article provides a brief rationale for using GO’s with students with LD and evidence of its effectiveness. Examples of different types of GO’s are provided as well as methods for designing and using them.
