This study aims to conduct a comparative analysis of a program concerning a basic course and an intensive
course which are cultural courses and major courses of pre-service teacher education for elementary physical
education. This is valuable as useful information for establishing a direction for developing a cultural course
and major course program concerning physical education curriculum of pre-service teacher education at the
university of education, and also is useful as basic data for researching the standardization of a pre-service
teacher education program for elementary physical education. This study modified and utilized a four-stage
comparative analysis method proposed by Bereday(1964). The study collected data posted on the websites as
well as college catalogs of 10 universities of education nationwide, and analyzed them according to cultural
course as well as basic course and intensive course which are major courses through a technical analysis step,
a juxtaposition analysis step, and a comparative analysis step. The study reached following conclusions. First,
the pre-service teacher education program should share the same context of the revised curriculum at the
national level. Second, the standardization of the pre-service teacher education program is required. Third, it is
important that the pre-service teacher education program should focus more on curriculum and instruction
studies. Fourth, it was analyzed that a basic course among physical education required courses should be
more emphasized.
