First of all, the characteristics of Japanese education can best be expressed by the words of “tradition and innovation,” and the word “Iki” which means the essence and elegance as the nuclear thought of human formation. In this paper, I have tried to analyze the process of the influences of foreign cultures on Japanese education and the development corresponding to those influences which may be divided into the following five stages: A. Continental Culture and Education 1) The influence of Su-Tang cultures and the education in the age of “Japanese style culture.” 2) The influence of Song culture and the education in the medieval and modern ages. 3) The influence of neo-Confucianism and the education in the age of Tokugawa Shogunate. B. Euro-American Culture and Education 4) The influence of European culture and the education in the age of “Shintoism culture” (The first open country). 5) The influence of American culture and the education in the age of “democratic culture” (The second open country). Finally, I have concluded that the most prominent feature of the personality and the ways of thinking of Japanese are the following three things: nature, man (“Bushido”) and the castle. Especially, “Bushido” is the most important thing among the three because it symbolizes them. Usually, Japanese are fond of the moon, the snow, and flowers at the level of “nature.” Their ideal image of human beings is “Bushi” or “Samurai” which meansa warrior. For “Bushis” always practice and keep social justice at the cost of their lives through war and peace. Therefore, “Bushido” is highly estimated even nowadays. The castle is currently used as local museum in each area, the purpose of which is to keep the culture proper to the locality and also to transmit the great spirit and the heritage of its ancestors.
