중국에서 근대적 개념의 최초 박물관은 전공교육과 학술연구를 위하여 설립된 대학박물관인 남통박물원이다 . 초창기의 대학박물관은 교육 자료실 형태의 진열실이나 표본실에서 시작되었 지만 현재는 전문적이면서 규모를 갖춘 100여개의 박물관으로 발전하였다. 그러나 대학박물관 은 수천에서 수만 건에 이르는 막대한 수장자료나 풍부한 인적자원을 가지고 있음에도 불구하 고 폐쇄적인 운영으로 일반인들의 이용이 불편하였다 이에 대학박물관은 교육과 연구를 위한 수장기능에서 탈피하고 일반인에게 개방하면서 커다란 변화를 겪고 있다. 최근에는 대학박물관이 기존의 단일학과 위주의 전문박물관에서 풍부한 소장품과 주위 환경 을 결합하는 대규모 야외 전시장이 공존하는 종합박물관으로 변화하고 있다 . 뿐만 아니라 전공 교육과 소질교육의 중요한 교육 기관으로서 학술연구 성과를 과학기술과 접목시키고 있다. 그 리고 지역사회에서의 과학교육과 사회교육의 중심지로서 학생은 물론 일반인에게 인문학적, 과 학적 소질을 함양하여 조화로운 사회 건설의 중요한 사회 문화적 역할을 수행하고 있다. 이처 럼 중국의 대학박물관은 전시에 대한 변화와 운영의 개혁 그리고 전문교육 뿐 아니라 사회교육 의 대외창구로서 활동을 강화면서 새로운 문화 시설로서의 역할과 기능을 하고 있다.
The first modern museum of China is the Nan Tong Museum established for academic studies or major-centered educations. Early university museums started as educational display room or specimen gallery but they have developed into hundred professional and massive museums at present. Many people felt inconvenience for exclusive management of university museums even though they possessed immense preserved materials and abundant human resources. Therefore. they are making a great effort to open to the public. breaking the old academic preservation role . Recently. those universi ty museums (college. single maj or universi ty) are going through major change to all-around (multiple) museums equipped with outdoor exhibition hall that unify their great collections and the surrounding social environment. Those museums as the important educational faci lities being in charge of general and academic educations. work to integrate their academic research results with scientific technologies. Moreover. they take a sociocultural role as the principal local education center sharing their knowledges with citizens. The university museums in China have reformed the management system. exhibition style and their educational ro le. not only professional but also social educations. so that today they are taking a new role of tourist attraction in region addition to exhibition function .
