본 연구는 국내 청소년 비행의 남녀 차이에 관한 메타분석이 드문 실정에서 최근 관련 연구물들을 종합하여 남녀 차이를 살펴보고자 하였다. 먼저 최근 청소년 비행의 남녀 차이 를 분석한 결과, 남학생에 비하여 여학생들의 참여가 많은 것으로 확인되었다. 그러나 그 차 이에 대한 효과크기는 작은 수준의 효과크기로 큰 차이는 나지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 청소년 비행의 남녀 차이에 영향을 주는 조절변인으로 비행유형, 학교급을 입력하 여 살펴보았다. 비행 유형별 하위집단 분석 결과, 모든 유형에서 여학생의 참여가 많은 것으 로 나타났다. 또한 학교급별 하위집단 분석에서 고등학생 집단의 남녀 차이가 가장 두드러 졌으며, 중학생 집단은 남녀 차이가 작은 것으로 확인되었다. 추가적으로 학교급별 비행 유 형에서의 남녀 차이를 살펴본 결과, 여자 고등학생의 성비행이 심각한 것으로 나타났다. 마 지막으로 연구시기에 따른 메타회귀분석 결과, 비교적 남녀 차이가 일정하게 유지되고 있음 을 확인하였다. 본 연구결과는 기존의 통념인 ‘남자 청소년들이 여자 청소년들에 비해 비행의 빈도나 수 준이 심각하다’라는 전제에 반하는, 작은 수준의 효과크기로 최근 여자 청소년들의 비행 참 여가 많은 것을 확인하여 청소년 비행에 대한 새로운 논의가 필요함을 발견하였다. 한편 비 행 유형별, 학교급별 조절변인이 남녀 차이에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 살펴본 결과, 자 고등 학생들의 ‘성비행’이 두드러지는 것을 확인하였다. 따라서 각 학교급별 차별화된 비행 대책 이 요구된다고 하겠다.
This study is designed to explore the gender differences in juvenile delinquency. In the meta-analysis of domestic articles, 153 effect sizes from 60 studies were included, representing the testing of 52,429 respondents. If data from a big sample size was entered into a weighted mean analysis, it would create the potential for a disproportionate effect. Thus, the studies using panel data were excluded from this study. The results were as follows: First, the overall effect sizes were .285, which indicated a small difference. It means that in recent cases, females have committed more misdeeds than males. Such a result is contrary to underlying theoretical assumptions that cases of female delinquency are substantially lower than that of males. Second, the gender differences were consistent across all delinquency types. These findings indicate that all delinquency types were more common in females. Third, from the subgroup analysis of school types, high school students showed the highest effect size, while middle school students showed the lowest. In particular, the effect size for sexual delinquency of high school students was generally larger than those for other school types. Forth, meta-regression analyses using time(date of research or publication year) as a moderator, focusing on cases of juvenile delinquency occurring between 2000 and the present showed that the gender gap had different patterns. Meta-regression result showed a slight decrease in the effect size of gender differences. To sum up, the findings of this study suggested that female students perpetrate delinquency more than males, contrary to the assumptions that underlie many theories and studies about juvenile delinquency. Thus, new discussion about the potential reasons for the small yet consistent effect size has to be undertaken.
