Recently research has been conducted on the effects on western methods of
recognition based on traditional painting centralized upon deep-color pigment
painting or watercolor. However, research in Ink wash Painting which is part of
traditional art requires further research due to the miniscule amount of research
that has been conducted on the topic so far. Thus, this study aims to shine a
light on the evidence regarding the idea of Pyong-Dam which is theoretically
based upon Ink Wash painting and research pieces to further explore the
characteristics and significance of Ink Wash Painting.
In order to do so the one must first of all explore the oriental ideologies. In
Pyong-Dam was used for the first time in ⌈ Figure Commentary⌋ written by Yu
So, and considering the oriental ideology the meaning of the idea of Pyong-Dam
can be more clarified. Confucianism, also hold evidence of the idea of
Pyong-Dam. In Confucian ideology lucidity is the greatest grace in showing a
human’s characteristics.
To show that Ink Wash Painting was an important characteristic in
flower-and-bird painting artist of Chosun Dynasty, Sim Sajung were selected. Upon
the famous flowers and birds paintings is Jung Sun, famous for its lucent color.
Sim Sajung was a famous artist of the flowers and birds painting, Through this
observation of this artist a simple Ink Wash Painting is apparent.
Through this study of Ink Wash Painting based on the idea of Pyung-Dam I
expect to expand an understanding of traditional art and bring diverse changes to
traditional art education.
