This study is to study the research trends of art therapy intervention of young children with emotional
and behavioral problems which was presented in domestic scholarly journals. Fifty five theses that were
presented in the registered and register candidates in Korea research foundation from 1996 to 2013 were
analyzed according to their subjects characteristics, research tools, intervention settings, and treatment
method. Followings are the result of this research. First, in regards to the subjects’ characteristic, there were
more theses with young children with disabilities than young children as subjects, and among the forms
of disability, developmental disability occupied the most. Second, research tools were classified into
picture-projection tool and objective diagnostic tool. Picture-projection tool was almost similarly used in the
diagnosis and the outcome measurement of the subject, and objective diagnostic tool was used according to
the goal of measurement. Third, one session per week occupied the most in conducting sessions per week
as a intervention settings, and in regards to the total treatment period, the period between two months to 4
months occupied the most. Sixteen to twenty sessions were generally conducted as treatment sessions, and
individual treatments were conducted more than group or family treatment. Fourth, in treatment method,
Mandala and mutual scribble story making were used as single program, and as for complex program,
developmental art therapy, and art therapy accompanied by counseling of parents. As for the programs
grafted with other intervention, art therapy accompanied by behavioral and language therapy and treatment
play were used. The result of this study will provide effective and systematic act therapeutic programs for
young children with emotional-behavioral problems.
