The reactive oxygen species (ROS) are considered to be an important mediator in pancreatic β cell destruction, thereby triggering the development of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. In the present study, HIV-1 Tat-mediated transduction of Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD) was investigated to evaluate its protective potential against streptozotocin (STZ)-induced cytotoxicity in insulin-producing MIN6N cells. Tat-SOD fusion protein was successfully delivered into MIN6N cells in a... -
Dietary Ascorbate Supplementation Reduces Oxidative Tissue Damage and Expression of iNOS in the Kidney of Streptozotocin Induced Diabetic Rats

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been suggested to be contributory factors in complications of diabetes mellitus. In the present study, we investigated the generation of superoxide, the lipid peroxide level measured as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, the vasorelaxation of isolated thoracic aorta and the iNOS expression in kidney of streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. Sprague Dawley rats were divided into four groups: control, ascorbate (400 mg/kg rat weight daily in drinking water),... -
The Protective Effect of Melatonin Administration against Adriamycin-induced Cardiotoxicity in Rats

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2001, Vol.5 No.4 6 333-342 (10 pages)
Adriamycin is a commonly used chemotherapeutic agent for cancer, including acute leukemia, lymphoma, and a number of solid human tumors. However, recent studies have recognized severe cardiotoxicity after an acute dose, which are likely the result of generation of free radicals and lipid peroxidation. Therefore, the clinical uses of adriamycin have been limited. Melatonin, the pineal gland hormone known for its ability to modulate circardian rhythm, has recently been studied in its several... -
The Effects of Melatonin on Cisplatin-Induced Renal Cortical Cell Injury in Rabbits Chunghui Kim*, Jin Han*, Nari Kim, Juhee Park, Youngchurl Yang1, and Euiyong Kim Departments of Physiology and Biophysics, 1Department of Anatomy, College of Medicine, Inje

most of cells, the mitochondria and lysosomes were increased in frequency. The endocytic vacuoles were not prominent and distribution of the brush border was irregular and shortened. These cisplatin-induced morphological changes were moderate in the melatonin-pretreated group. These results suggest that the toxicity of cisplatin is associated with the generation of reactive oxygen free radicals and that melatonin is a powerful antioxidant, which prevents some of the adverse effects of cisplatin. -
Activation of ATP-sensitive Potassium Channels by the Predominant Metabolite of Isoflurane in Rabbit Ventricular Myocytes
JinHan, NariKim, EuiyongKim, SungjuKim, KangheeCho 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 11 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2001, Vol.5 No.2 7 165-175 (11 pages)
Background: Recent in vivo experimental evidence suggests that isoflurane-induced cardioprotection may involve KATP channel activation. However, it was demonstrated that isoflurane inhibited KATP channel activities in the inside-out patch mode. To explain this discrepancy, the present investigation tested the hypothesis that a metabolite of isoflurane, trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), contributes to isoflurnae-induced cardioprotection via KATP channel activation during myocardial ischemia and... -
The Mechanism of t-Butylhydroperoxide-Induced Apoptosis in IMR- 32 Human Neuroblastoma Cells

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.1 3 19-28 (10 pages)
Apoptosis has been implicated in the pathophysiological mechanisms of various neurodegenerative diseases. In a variety of cell types, oxidative stress has been demonstrated to play an important role in the apoptotic cell death. However, the exact mechanism of oxidative stress-induced apoptosis in neuronal cells is not known. In this study, we induced oxidative stress in IMR-32 human neuroblastoma cells with tert- butylhydroperoxide (TBHP), which was confirmed by significantly reduced... -
Role of Phospholipase A2 in Oxidant-induced Alteration in Phosphate Transport in Primary Cultured Rabbit Renal Proximal Tubule Cells
KwonMooPark, SunHeeKo, JaeSukWoo, JinSupJung, SangHoLee, YongKeunKim 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1998, Vol.2 No.5 8 601-609 (9 pages)
The present study was undertaken to examine the role of phospholipase A2 (PLA2) in oxidant-induced inhibition of phosphate transport in primary cultured rabbit renal proximal tubule cells. Uptakes of phosphate and glucose were dose-dependently inhibited by an oxidant t-butylhydroperoxide (tBHP), and the significant inhibition appeared at 0.025 mM of tBHP, whereas tBHP-induced alterations in lipid peroxidation and cell viability were seen at 0.5 mM. tBHP stimulated arachidonic acid (AA) release... -
Hypoxia-Induced EDNO Release is Further Augmented by Previous Hypoxia and Reoxygenation in Rabbit Aortic Endothelium
JaeJinHan, SukHyoSuh, KyungPhilSuh, KiWhanKim 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1998, Vol.2 No.2 9 209-216 (8 pages)
The present study was designed: (1) to determine whether or not hypoxia stimulates the release of endothelium-derived relaxing factors (EDRFs) from endothelial cells, and (2) to examine whether or not the hypoxia-induced EDRFs release is further augmented by previous hypoxia-reoxygenation, using bioassay system. In the bioassay experiment, rabbit aorta with endothelium was used as EDRFs donor vessel and rabbit carotid artery without endothelium as a bioassay test ring. The test ring was... -
The Staging of Major Mood Disorders

대한신경정신의학회 Psychiatry Investigation 2018, 제 15권 제 8호 2 747-758 (12 pages)
Objective_Staging of psychiatric disorders is gaining momentum and the purpose of this review is to examine whether major mood disorders can be defined according to stages. Methods_In April 2018 the PubMed electronic data base was scrutinized by a combination of various search terms like “major depressive disorder and staging,” “bipolar disorder and neuroprogression,” etc. To incorporate the latest findings the search was limited to the last 10 years. Both original and review articles were... -
