to and manipulate the sound structure of spoken language. Nevertheless, a series of previous studies suggests that children’s ability to match spoken words to written words while reading is important in early reading acquisition. The purpose of this study was to examine a model of early literacy development in which children’s concept of word is assumed to facilitate the development of phonological awareness and sight vocabulary. In this study, 30 kindergarten children who learn English as a... -
Assessing Cultural, Linguistic, and Indigenous Competencies: The Case of Early Childhood Care and Development Teachers in the Philippines
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 19 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2021, Vol.15 No.1 8 137-155 (19 pages)
As a country with highly diverse local languages, cultures and indigenous groups, the Philippines’ Early Childhood Care and Development Council (ECCD) developed a manual for teachers that prescribes specific cultural, linguistic and indigenous competency standards. To determine the ECCD teachers’ levels in these competencies, this study utilizes self-assessment and supervisors’ assessment surveys. With the involvement of 274 teachers (locally known either as Child Development Workers or... -
Questioning during Story-telling Activities in Singapore Pre-schools

about their views on story-telling activities. Results have shown that teachers mostly asked factual and procedural questions. The questions asked also belonged to the lowest cognitive level of Bloom’s Taxonomy of learning domains. While most teachers agree questions could help to facilitate children’s thinking, some of them think that questions of the higher cognitive levels may be too demanding for children of this age. These results have future implications for various stakeholders. -
Infants Spontaneous Musical Behavior on the Basis of SoI-EY Framework
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 22 Pages

were conducted based on three domains of the SoI-EY framework. We observed that Boy A ranged from Level 2 to Level 4 in the three domains, showing Level 2 overall, while boys B and C fit Level 2 in the reactive domain, and Levels 2 to 4 in the interactive and proactive domains. The results indicated that children of similar ages have different musical development levels, and that a child’s environment, developmental level, and playmates can all influence the level of musical development. -

psychometrically sound assessment tools to identify children timely. This literature review examines the extant literature related to assessment methods used for identification of children for early intervention/early childhood special education (EI/ECSE) services in four settings: China, Singapore, Taiwan, and Turkey. Search criteria for the study started with peer-reviewed articles, published in English between 2008 and 2019. In addition to the peer-reviewed article search, government reports... -
The Effects of Digital Game-Based Learning on Early English Literacy Task for Non-Native Speakers
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 18 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2019, Vol.13 No.2 7 123-140 (18 pages)
Despite the growing evidence for the benefits of digital game-based learning (DGBL) in promoting learning in various contexts, the effects of DGBL on early English literacy learning for non-native speakers remains unknown. The present study examined the effectiveness of using DGBL in enhancing student learning in an early English literacy task for non-native speakers. In the experiment, 66 Malay pre-school students who were identified as having low literacy in English (determined using a... -
The Role of Professional Development in Improving Quality and Supporting Child Outcomes in Early Education and Care
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 20 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2019, Vol.13 No.2 4 49-68 (20 pages)
A skilled workforce that understands the needs of children and can deliver high quality curricula to children with diverse needs, is required in order to realise the wide-ranging benefits that could follow from public investment in ECEC provision (such as in-service Professional Development (PD)). It is well established in the literature that high quality ECEC is important for children’s outcomes, and that variations in quality can be explained, to a large extent, by variations in educator... -

The study was carried out using the convergent parallel mixed method design with questionnaire, focus group discussion, and one-on-one interviews as the data collection instruments. The purposive, convenient, and stratified random sampling techniques were used in selecting a total sample size of 112 participants consisting of identified problem learners,... -

As new technologies emerge and evolve, possibilities open up for their use in research. In this article, we consider wearable digital video glasses as a data collection tool in qualitative research involving child participants. We draw on data from a recording made during our pilot study of the ways young children’s social interactions produced learning opportunities during family shopping experiences. The recording was produced when the digital video glasses were worn by one six-year old boy...
