Overexpressed Mitochondrial Thioredoxin Protects PC12 Cells from Hydrogen Peroxide and Serum-deprivation
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 5 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2003, Vol.7 No.1 7 33-37 (5 pages)
Oxidative damage to mitochondria is a critical mechanism in necrotic or apoptotic cell death induced by many kinds of toxic chemicals. Thioredoxin (Trx) family proteins are known to play protective roles in organisms under oxidative stress through redox reaction by using reducing equivalents of cysteines at a conserved active site, Cys-X-X-Cys. Whereas biological and physiological properties of Trx1 are well characterized, significance of mitochondrial thioredoxin (Trx2) is not well known.... -
The Protective Effect of Melatonin Administration against Adriamycin-induced Cardiotoxicity in Rats
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 10 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2001, Vol.5 No.4 6 333-342 (10 pages)
Adriamycin is a commonly used chemotherapeutic agent for cancer, including acute leukemia, lymphoma, and a number of solid human tumors. However, recent studies have recognized severe cardiotoxicity after an acute dose, which are likely the result of generation of free radicals and lipid peroxidation. Therefore, the clinical uses of adriamycin have been limited. Melatonin, the pineal gland hormone known for its ability to modulate circardian rhythm, has recently been studied in its several... -
The Effect of NO Donor on Contraction, Cytosolic Ca2+ Level and Ionic Currents in Guinea-pig Ileal Smooth Muscle
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2000, Vol.4 No.1 5 33-40 (8 pages)
This study was designed to clarify the mechanism of the inhibitory action of a nitric oxide (NO) donor, 3-morpholino-sydnonimine (SIN-1), on contraction, cytosolic Ca2 level ([Ca2]i), and ionic currents in guinea-pig ileum. SIN-1 (0.01∼100μM) inhibited 25 mM KCl- or histamine (10μM)-induced contraction in a concentration-dependent manner. SIN-1 reduced both the 25 mM KCl- and the histamine-stimulated increases in muscle tension in parallel with decreased [Ca2]i. Using... -
Enhanced Expression of Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase May Be Responsible for Altered Vascular Reactivity in Streptozotocin-induced Diabetic Rats

nitrotyrosine, a specific foot print of peroxynitrite, was significantly increased in endothelial cells and smooth muscle layers in STZ-induced diabetic aorta. Taken together, the present findings indicate that enhanced release of NO by iNOS along with increased lipid peroxidation in diabetic conditions may be responsible, at least in part, for the augmented contractility, possibly through the modification of endothelial integrity or ecNOS activity of endothelium in STZ-diabetic rat aorta. -
Acute Pulmonary Responses in Vivo to Silica Complexed with H+, Zn2+, or Fe3+
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.2 8 183-189 (7 pages)
This investigation is to determine whether the surface complexation of iron influence acute pulmonary responses induced by silica. For this study, three varieties of cation complexed silica were used: silica-H, -Zn2, and -Fe3, since the first two are not active in the transport of electrons and generate little free radicals relative to the dust with the surface iron. Rats (270 to 280 g) were intratracheally (IT) instilled with saline, silica-H, -Zn2, or... -
Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase mRNA Expression and Nitric Oxide Production in Silica-Induced Acute Inflammatory Lung Injury
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages

free radical by an inducible nitric oxide synthase(iNOS), which reacts with superoxide anion to form peroxynitrite, a more highly reactive toxic species. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate acute inflammatory lung injury and to determine iNOS mRNA induction and nitric oxide production by rat broncho-alveolar lavage cells following intratracheal treatment of silica. After 4 h exposure to silica, differential counts of broncho- alveolar lavage cells and lactate dehydrogenase(LDH)... -
Electrolysis of Physiological Salt Solution Generates a Factor that Relaxes Vascular Smooth Muscle
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1998, Vol.2 No.2 10 217-223 (7 pages)
Oxygen-derived free radicals have been implicated in many important functions in the biological system. Electrical field stimulation (EFS) causes arterial relaxation in animal models. We found that EFS applied to neither muscle nor nerve but to Krebs solution caused a relaxation of rat aorta that had been contracted with phenylephrine. In the present study, therefore, we investigated the characteristics of this EIRF (electrolysis-induced relaxing factor) using rat isolated aorta. Results... -
Hypoxia-Induced EDNO Release is Further Augmented by Previous Hypoxia and Reoxygenation in Rabbit Aortic Endothelium
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1998, Vol.2 No.2 9 209-216 (8 pages)
The present study was designed: (1) to determine whether or not hypoxia stimulates the release of endothelium-derived relaxing factors (EDRFs) from endothelial cells, and (2) to examine whether or not the hypoxia-induced EDRFs release is further augmented by previous hypoxia-reoxygenation, using bioassay system. In the bioassay experiment, rabbit aorta with endothelium was used as EDRFs donor vessel and rabbit carotid artery without endothelium as a bioassay test ring. The test ring was... -
Nitric Oxide Prevents the Bovine Cerebral Endothelial Cell Death Induced by Serum-Deprivation
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1997, Vol.1 No.5 6 515-521 (7 pages)
Endothelial cells play a central role in the inflammatory processes, and activation of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) is a key component in that inflammatory processes. Previously, we reported that tumor necrosis factor alpha(TNFα) had protective effect of cell death induced by serum deprivation and this protection was related to NF-κB activation. Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) is a member of the molecules which transcription is regulated mainly by NF-κB. And the role of nitric... -
