Sympathetic skin response (SSR) is defined as a minute change of skin potential after electrical stimulation. This test measures the change in voltage that originates from the surface of the skin and is attributed to sudomotor activity. The aim of this study was to define the criteria for validation of the responses. 40 normal subjects (20-73 yr of age) with non-sympathetic dysfunction were tested and SSR was generated from all subjects. The SSR latency was 1,331.22± 177.51 ms in the right... -

The electrical and heating properties of copper-incorporated graphite fibers fabricated using different ultrasonication techniques

Electrical energy can be converted into heat energy through ohmic joule heating. Metallic materials are typically used in electrical heating elements because of their great electrical conductivity. However, metallic materials have several weaknesses, such as corrosion susceptibility, heavy weight, high manufacturing costs, and electromagnetic wave emissions [1,2]. To resolve these problems, carbon materials with good electrical conductivity, such as carbon fibers, graphite fibers, carbon... -
Graphitization of PAN-based carbon fibers by CO₂ laser irradiation

that have attracted much interest in the aerospace industry, but their high manufacturing cost and low yield are still problems that prevent their wide applications in practice. This paper presents a laser-based process for graphitization of carbon fiber (CF) and explores the effect of laser radiation on the microstructure of CF. The obtained Raman spectra indicate that the outer surface of CF evolves from turbostratic structures into a three-dimensional ordered state after being irradiated by a... -
Improvement of gas sensing properties of carbon nanofibers based on polyacrylonitrile and pitch by steam activation
Jeongsik Kim, Hyung-Il Kim, Jumi Yun 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 5 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2017, Vol.24 5 36-40 (5 pages)
Polyacrylonitrile/pitch nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning as a precursor for a gas sensor material. Pitch nanofibers were properly fabricated by incorporating polyacrylonitrile as an electrospinning supplement component. Polyacrylonitrile/pitch nanofibers were activated with steam at various temperatures followed by subsequent carbonization to make carbon nanofibers with a highly conductive graphitic structure. Steam activation was effective in facilitating gas adsorption onto the... -
Synthesis, characterization, and antibacterial performance of Ag-modified graphene oxide reinforced electrospun polyurethane nanofibers
Bishweshwar Pant, Mira Park, Rae-Sang Jang, Woo-Cheol Choi, Hak-Yong Kim, Soo-Jin Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 5 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2017, Vol.23 3 17-21 (5 pages)
Polyurethane (PU) nanofibers containing graphene oxide (GO) and Ag doped functionalized reduced graphene oxide (Ag-RGO) were successfully prepared via the electrospinning technique. The uniform distribution of GO sheets along with Ag nanoparticle in the nano?bers was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and the elemental mapping technique. X-ray diffraction and thermal gravimetric analysis veri?ed the presence of GO and Ag in the bicomposite nano?brous mats. Antibacterial tests against... -
Extraction and characterization of lignin from black liquor and preparation of biomass-based activated carbon therefrom
Daeyeon Kim, Jinsil Cheon, Jeonghoon Kim, Daekyun Hwang, Ikpyo Hong, Oh Hyeong Kwon, Won Ho Park, Donghwan Cho 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2017, Vol.22 14 81-88 (8 pages)
In the present study, biomass-based lignin was extracted from industrial waste black liquor and the extracted lignin was characterized by means of attenuated total reflectance- Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The extracted lignin was carbonized at different temperatures and then activated with steam at 850oC. The extracted lignin in powder state was transformed into a bulky carbonized lignin due to possible fusion between the lignin... -
Green synthesis of fluorescent carbon dots from carrot juice for in vitro cellular imaging
Yang Liu, Yanan Liu, Mira Park, Soo-Jin Park, Yifan Zhang, Md Rashedunnabi Akanda, Byung-Yong Park, Hak Yong Kim 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 7 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2017, Vol.21 7 61-67 (7 pages)
We report the use of carrot, a new and inexpensive biomaterial source, for preparing high quality carbon dots (CDs) instead of semi-conductive quantum dots for bioimaging application. The as-derived CDs possessing down and up-conversion photoluminescence features were obtained from carrot juice by commonly used hydrothermal treatment. The corresponding physiochemical and optical properties were investigated by electron microscopy, fluorescent spectrometry, and other spectroscopic methods. The... -

of the CFs/MAPP composites are likely to be different in terms of MA content. Surface characteristics were observed by scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and single fiber contact angle method. The mechanical properties of the composites were also measured by a critical stress intensity factor (KIC). From the KIC test results, the KIC values were increased to a maximum value of 3.4 MPa with the 0.1 % of MA in the PP, and then decreased with higher MA content. -

the above pitches by single-hole melt spinning and additional heat treatment, for oxidization and carbonization. Even though spinnable pitches and carbon fibers were processed under the same conditions, the melt-spinning and properties of the carbon fiber were different depending on the raw materials. A fine carbon fiber could not be prepared from slurry oil, and the different diameter carbon fibers were produced from the PFO and coal tar pitch. These results seem to be closely correlated with t...
