Concept of Word in Text: The Prerequisite in Early English Literacy for ESL Learners in Hong Kong
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 18 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2021, Vol.15 No.2 1 1-18 (18 pages)
Research has shown that English literacy instructional practices such as direct teaching of phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing are effective for teaching English as second language learners. Previous research on early reading acquisition has focused on phonological awareness?the ability to consciously attend to and manipulate the sound structure of spoken language. Nevertheless, a series of previous studies suggests that children’s ability to match spoken words... -
“Polish One’s Jade with Stones from Another Mountain”: Examining the Case of a New Zealand-Inspired Early Childhood Education Centre in China
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 24 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2021, Vol.15 No.1 4 53-76 (24 pages)
This article reports on a case study that investigated the implementation of New Zealand early childhood education (ECE) beliefs in a kindergarten in China and its implications. The study used a process of document analysis and individual interviews with teachers and parents to collect data. The incorporation of “Western” education approaches is not a new phenomenon in China. This paper uses empirical findings to highlight new concerns regarding this ongoing practice. It analyses the tensions... -
A Review of EI/ECSE Systems Across Four Settings: Procedures and Lessons Learned
Serra Acar, Songtian Zeng, Ching-I Chen, Huichao Xie Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 27 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2019, Vol.13 No.3 4 45-71 (27 pages)
There is currently no reliable information on the number of children with disabilities across the globe due to differences in terminology, child find systems, and available of psychometrically sound assessment tools to identify children timely. This literature review examines the extant literature related to assessment methods used for identification of children for early intervention/early childhood special education (EI/ECSE) services in four settings: China, Singapore, Taiwan, and Turkey.... -
Multiple Representations in Preschool Numeracy: Teaching a Lesson on More-or-Less
Alfredo Bautista, Malikka Habib, Raymond Ong, Anthony Eng, Rebecca Bull 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 28 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2019, Vol.13 No.2 6 95-122 (28 pages)
Mathematics education researchers and curriculum designers have emphasized the importance of representations in fostering students’ mathematical learning. However, most classroom-based studies on representations have focused on primary and secondary levels, and there is limited literature on how preschool teachers integrate representations in regular classroom activities. This qualitative study illustrates specific ways in which preschool educators may utilize multiple representations to teach... -
Translanguaging through Visual Arts in Early Childhood: A Case Study in a Hong Kong Kindergarten
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 21 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2019, Vol.13 No.1 3 47-67 (21 pages)
Over the decades, western academic literature has embraced the power of visual arts as the first language with which children connect with the people and environment of their world. However, children in Hong Kong, a multi-cultural region in a Chinese context, have limited experiences in using visual language in the kindergartens due to pre-schools’ academic-oriented atmosphere and focus on primary school readiness. Rather than engaging in visual arts, students are forced to start writing... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 32 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2017, Vol.11 No.3 5 81-112 (32 pages)
This study explored the curriculum-related beliefs and practices reported by Singapore kindergarten teachers at a time when concerted efforts are being made to promote children’s holistic development through a child-centered curriculum that emphasizes active learning through play and interaction. A questionnaire was administered to a sample of 167 teachers of 4- to 5-year-olds. Factor analyses revealed three reliable factors for teachers’ beliefs and four factors for their classroom practices.... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 19 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.2 3 27-45 (19 pages)
a cross-cultural study of early childhood teachers’ perspectives on ADHD that I conducted a few years ago. I then describe peer relations of children with ADHD based on both a review of relevant literature and an initial analysis of my current study on young children considered at-risk of being diagnosed with ADHD. I conclude with implications of these studies for reexamining the construct of empathy, building intersubjective pedagogy, and considering empathy and intersubjectivity in culture. -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 21 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.2 2 5-25 (21 pages)
This paper begins with a brief historical overview that provides a context for understanding approaches to story reading in U.S. preschools. It also discusses factors that have prompted a new trend in story reading, one emphasizing story comprehension directly, not as a vehicle for developing only oral vocabulary and print-related literacy skills. This backdrop, as well as discussions of new research and achievement difficulties in school-age children, sets the stage for the author’s suggestion... -
