of susceptible plant varieties, increase in global trade in agricultural products, intercontinental transportation networks, and changes in global climatic conditions. Another concern might be the emergence of a begomovirus complex and satellite DNA molecules. Thorough understanding of the pathosystems is needed for the designing of effective managements. Efforts should also be made towards the integration of the resistant genes for the development of transgenic plants specially tomato and sweet... -

The Plant Pathology Journal 9 Pages
4 324-332 (9 pages)
a serious threat to the winter barley cultivated in the southern regions in Korea. It is important to develop resistant varieties for stable and high-yield production. The objectives of this study were to evaluate 22 genotypes of exotic barley germplasms carrying the resistance genes rym1 through rym12, with the exception of rym10, and to determine the genes that confer resistance to BaYMV or BaMMV in Korea. Using the traditional visual scoring of symptoms at 4 locations over 3 years, average... -
Response of Bentgrass Cultivars to Microdochium nivale Isolates Collected from Golf Courses
The Plant Pathology Journal 10 Pages
4 232-241 (10 pages)
Pink snow mold, caused by Microdochium nivale, is a major disease on cool season turfgrasses in golf courses in northern Unites States. The relative susceptibility of 17 commercial cultivars of three bentgrass species (creeping, colonial and velvet bentgrass) to Microdochium nivale and the aggressiveness of M. nivale eight isolates obtained from infected turfgrasses on golf courses in Wisconsin were evaluated under controlled conditions. For the field trial, susceptibility of 2 year-old 12... -
Screening of Rhizobacteria for Biological Control of Cucumber Root and Crown Rot Caused by Phytophthora drechsleri
The Plant Pathology Journal 7 Pages
12 78-84 (7 pages)
Antagonistic rhizobacteria, more specifically fluorescent pseudomonads and certain species of Bacillus, are known as biocontrol agents of fungal root diseases of agronomic crops. In this study, 144 bacteria were isolated from cucumber rhizosphere and screened as potential biological control agents against Phytophthora drechsleri, the causal agent of cucumber root rot, in vitro condition. Non-volatile compounds of 23 isolates showed noticeable inhibition zone (> 30%) against P. drechsleri,... -
Generation of Antibodies Against Rice stripe virus Proteins Based on Recombinant Proteins and Synthetic Polypeptides
The Plant Pathology Journal 7 Pages
7 37-43 (7 pages)
Rice stripe virus (RSV) is one of serious epidemic pathogens for rice species grown in many Asian countries. Therefore, it is necessary to produce a diagnostic detection kit applicable in fields for RSV detection. In this study, RSV proteins that were derived from recombinant proteins and synthetic polypeptides as antigens were generated and were raised in rabbits for antiserum production. Among seven proteins in RSV, genes that code for NCP and NS3 proteins were cloned and subcloned into vector... -
Isolation and Characterization of Rice OsHRL Gene Related to Bacterial Blight Resistance
The Plant Pathology Journal 4 Pages
17 417-420 (4 pages)
The expression of HR-like lesion inducing gene of Oryza sativa (OsHRL) was slightly increased by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) infection. Transgenic rice plants over-expressing OsHRL gene were challenged with Xoo and the development of disease symptoms were examined to investigate the effect of OsHRL gene expression on plant defense responses. The over-expression of OsHRL increased disease resistance against Xoo compared with wild type plants. -
Management of Charcoal Rot of Sesame by Seed Soaking in Medicinal Plant Extracts and Hot Water
The Plant Pathology Journal 8 Pages
11 372-379 (8 pages)
Macrophomina phaseolina causing charcoal rot was isolated from sesame seeds (cvs. Giza 32 and Shandawel-3) collected from different localities of Assiut, Sohage and El-Minia Governorates. The fungus was found in the highest frequently in samples collected from Assiut Governorate followed by Sohag and finally EL Minia Governorate. The obtained isolates were different in their virulence on the tested sesame cvs. Also, they differed in their growth nature including colony color and sclerotial... -
Biocontrol of Potato White Mold Using Coniothyrium minitans and Resistance of Potato Cultivars to Sclerotinia sclerotiorum
The Plant Pathology Journal 7 Pages
7 346-352 (7 pages)
This study was conducted in Bahar and Lalehjin, Hamadan, Iran to assess the biocontrol efficacy of Coniothyrium minitans Campbell against potato white mold caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary under field and greenhouse conditions. In addition, the resistance of common potato cultivars against S. sclerotiorum was determined in a greenhouse experiment. After straw inoculation of six potato cultivars (Pashandi, Istambouli, Agria, Marfauna, Alpha and Spartaan) with S. sclerotiorum, the... -
Genetic Stability of Magnaporthe oryzae during Successive Passages through Rice Plants and on Artificial Medium
The Plant Pathology Journal 8 Pages
3 313-320 (8 pages)
Genetic instability of the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae has been suggested as a major factor underlying the rapid breakdown of host resistance in the field. However, little information is available on the mechanism of genetic instability. In this study, we assessed the stability of repetitive DNA elements and several key phenotypic traits important for pathogenesis after serially transferring two isolates though rice plants and an artificial medium. Using isolate 70-15, we obtained a... -
Detection of Pathotypes and Genetic Diversity of Cercospora beticola

2 306-312 (7 pages)
15 pathotypes were detected. All employed sugar beet cultivars were resistant to Pathotype no:1 comprising most of the isolates. Genetic diversity of the causal agent was characterized by AFLP reaction. The products acquired at the end of AFLP reaction were detected by means of Beckman CEQ 8800 DNA Capillary Series Analysis and the results obtained were evaluated according to the similarity index UPGMA. For the genetic analysis of C. beticola isolates, 9874 polymorphic fragments of sizes between...
