in a concentration- dependent manner. The GABAB receptor agonist baclofen and GABAC receptor agonist CACA did not affect OMR. The observed modifications in OMR included decreased anterograde rotation (0.01∼0.03ՌM), coexistence of retrograde rotation and decreased anterograde rotation (0.1∼30ՌM) and only retrograde rotation (100ՌM∼1 mM). In contrast, the GABAA receptor antagonist bicuculline blocked muscimol- induced retrograde rotation. Based on these results, we... -

in RANKL-stimulated RAW264.7 cells and in bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMMs). HF6-FC exerts its inhibitory effects by suppression of p38 and NF-ՊB but activation of ERK. In addition, HF6-FC significantly decreased the expression of NFATc1 and c-Fos, the master regulator of osteoclast differentiation. The data indicate that components of HF6-FC may have therapeutic effects on bone-destructive processes such as osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and periodontal bone resorption. -
Antifungal and Anticancer Activities of a Protein from the Mushroom Cordyceps militaris

The mushroom Cordyceps militaris has been used for a long time in eastern Asia as a nutraceutical and in traditional Chinese medicine as a treatment for cancer patients. In the present study, a cytotoxic antifungal protease was purified from the dried fruiting bodies of C. militaris using anion-exchange chromatography on a DEAE-Sepharose column. Electrophoretic analyses indicated that this protein, designated C. militaris protein (CMP), has a molecular mass of 12 kDa and a pI of 5.1. The optimum... -

even at higher concentration (100Ռg/ml). GGN4 induced larger conductances in the planar bilayers which were formed with lipids extracted from Gram-positive B. subtilis than in those from E. coli (p<0.01), however, the effects of GGN4 were not selective in the bilayers formed with lipids from E. coli and red blood cells. Addition of an acidic phospholipid, phosphatidylserine to planar bilayers increased the GGN4-induced membrane conductance (p<0.05), but addition of phosphatidylcholine or... -

shown to affect calcium signaling in neurons. However, there are no reports on the effect of apigenin on glutamate-induced calcium signaling in neurons. We investigated whether apigenin affects glutamate-induced increase of free intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) in cultured rat hippocampal neurons, using fura-2-based digital calcium imaging and microfluorimetry. The hippocampal neurons were used between 10 and 13 days in culture from embryonic day 18 rats. Pretreatment of the cells with... -
Inhibition of Adenosine Triphosphate-stimulated Mucin Secretion from Airway Epithelial Cells by Schizandrin

Schizandrae Fructus has been used for controlling respiratory allergic or inflammatory diseases in folk medicine and their components, schizandrin, schizandrin-A and gomisin-A were reported to have diverse biological effects. In this study, we investigated whether schizandrin, schizandrin-A and gomisin-A affect adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-induced mucin secretion from cultured airway epithelial cells. Confluent primary hamster tracheal surface epithelial (HTSE) cells were metabolically... -
Effects of Phenylephrine on the Excitability of Medial Vestibular Nuclear Neurons in Rats

potential of medial vestibular nuclear neurons was decreased by phenylephrine (n=15). Phenylephrine increased the amplitude of afterhyperpolarization without changes in the resting membrane potential and spike width. In voltage-clamp mode, the whole potassium currents of the medial vestibular nuclear neurons were increased by phenylephrine (n=12). These experimental results suggest that α-receptor mediates the inhibitory effects on the neuronal activity of the medial vestibular nuclear neuron. -
Effects ofSphingosine-1-phosphate, Furosemide and Indomethacin on Mucin Release from Airway Goblet Cells

In this study, we investigated whether sphingosine-1-phosphate, furosemide, and indomethacin affect mucin release from airway goblet cells. Confluent primary hamster tracheal surface epithelial cells were metabolically radiolabeled and chased for 30 min or 24 hr in the presence of varying concentrations of the above agents to assess the effects on 3H-mucin release. Sphingosine-1-phosphate stimulated mucin release during 30 min of treatment period in a dose-dependent manner. However, furosemide... -

these agents with the inhibitory action of PLL and the stimulatory action of ATP on mucin release. Confluent primary hamster tracheal surface epithelial (HTSE) cells were metabolically radiolabeled with 3H-glucosamine for 24 h and chased for 30 min in the presence of varying concentrations of each agent to assess the effects on 3H-mucin release. The results were as follows: TNF-alpha, CTMA and LPD increased mucin release at the highest concentration, but IL-1beta did not. We conclude that CTMA... -

increase intracellular Ca2 concentration ([Ca2]i) by activating ET-B receptor. SM709 (1,2-O-diferulyl-glycerol), an ingredient of bamboo extract, inhibited ET-1-induced [Ca2]i increase in a concentration- and time-dependent manner, although another ingredients SM707 and SM708 had no effect on ET-1-induced [Ca2]i increase in human melanocytes. SM709 (100μM), however, did not affect [Ca2]i increase induced by thapsigargin and caffeine, suggesting that SM709 has...
