Induction of the Intrinsic Apoptotic Pathway by 3-Deazaadenosine Is Mediated by BAX Activation in HL-60 Cells

3-Deazaadenosine (DZA), a potent inhibitor of S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase, was previously proposed to induce intrinsic apoptosis in human leukemic cells. In the present study, we analyzed the mechanism underlying the DZA-induced intrinsic apoptotic pathway. DZA activated typical caspase-dependent apoptosis in HL-60 cells, as demonstrated by an accumulation of hypo-diploidic cells, the processing of multiple procaspases and an inhibitory effect of z-VAD-Fmk on this cell death. During... -
Identification of Differentially Expressed Genes in Bovine Follicular Cystic Ovaries

Follicular cystic ovary (FCO) is one of the most frequently diagnosed ovarian diseases and is a major cause of reproductive failure in mammalian species. However, the mechanism by which FCO is induced remains unclear. Genetic alterations which affect the functioning of many kinds of cells and/or tissues could be present in cystic ovaries. In this study, we performed a comparison analysis of gene expression in order to identify new molecules useful in discrimination of bovine FCO with follicular... -
Chronic Administration of Monosodium Glutamate under Chronic Variable Stress Impaired Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis Function in Rats
HeeJeongSeo, Hyang-DoHam, HyungYongJin, WooHyungLee, HyunSubHwang, Soon-AhPark, YongSungKim, SuckCheiChoi, SeoulLee, KyungJaeOh, ByungSook 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is the primary endocrine system to respond to stress. The HPA axis may be affected by increased level of corticotrophin-releasing factors under chronic stress and by chronic administration of monosodium glutamate (MSG). The purpose of this study was to investigate whether chronic MSG administration aggravates chronic variable stress (CVS)-induced behavioral and hormonal changes. Twenty-four adult male Sprague-Dawley rats, weighing 200∼220 g, were... -
Effects of Saccharin Intake on Hippocampal and Cortical Plasticity in Juvenile and Adolescent Rats

cortex layer IV - II/III pathways in the 6-week old saccharin-fed rats. There was no significant difference in LTP formation in the hippocampus between the control group and saccharin-treated group in both male and female rats. Also in the somatosensory cortex, we did not see a significant difference in LTP among the groups. Therefore, we conclude that saccharin-intake during 3∼6 weeks may not affect the development of physiological function of the cortical and hippocampal synapses in rats. -
Maternal Social Separation of Adolescent Rats Induces Hyperactivity and Anxiolytic Behavior

early stressful adverse life events such as maternal and social separation plays an essential role in the development of the nervous system. Adolescent Sprague-Dawley rats that were separated on postnatal day 14 from their dam and litters (maternal social separation, MSS) showed hyperactivity and anxiolytic behavior in the open field test, elevated plus-maze test, and forced-swim test. Biologically, the number of astrocytes was significantly increased in the prefrontal cortex of MSS adolescent... -
Role of Caveolin-1 in Indomethacin-induced Death of Human Hepatoadenocarcinoma SK-Hep1 Cells

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2008, Vol.12 No.4 3 143-148 (6 pages)
Caveolin-1 (CAV1) is an integral membrane protein that may function as a scaffold for plasma membrane proteins and acts as a tumor suppressor protein. One causative factor of chemotherapy- resistant cancers is P-plycoprotein (P-gp), the product of the multidrug resistance-1 gene (MDR1), which is localized in the caveolar structure. Currently, the interactive roles of CAV1 and MDR1 expression in the death of cancer cells remain controversial. In this study, we investigated the effects of... -
Effects of Repeated Citalopram Treatments on Chronic Mild Stress- Induced Growth Associated Protein-43 mRNA Expression in Rat Hippocampus
Sang-HaPark, Song-hyenChoi, JiminLee, SeungwooKang, You-ChanShin, Hyun-JuKim, HyunJungKim, SeungKeonShin, Min-SooLee, Kyung-HoShin 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2008, Vol.12 No.3 5 117-124 (8 pages)
Although growth associated protein-43 (GAP-43) is known to play a significant role in the regulation of axonal growth and the formation of new neuronal connections in the hippocampus, there is only a few studies on the effects of acute stress on GAP-43 mRNA expression in the hippocampus. Moreover, the effects of repeated citalopram treatment on chronic mild stress (CMS)-induced changes in GAP-43 mRNA expression in the hippocampus have not been explored before. To explore this question, male rats... -
Attenuated Sympathetic Activity and Its Relation to Obesity in MSG Injected and Sympathectomized Rats
So-YoungPark, , Yong-WoonKim, Jin-MyoungDan, Jong-YeonKim 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages

In order to characterize the role of sympathetic activity in obesity, we repeatedly assessed sympathetic activity via power spectral analyses of heart rate variability in the same subjects at 7, 11, 25, and 60 weeks, using monosodium glutamate (MSG)-induced obese and control rats. The effects of lower sympathetic activity on obesity were also evaluated. Fat mass in MSG rats was already higher at 7 weeks, but the sympathetic activity did not differ between 7 and 25 weeks. Between 25 and 60 weeks,... -
Expression of Nitric Oxide Synthase and Endothelin-1 in Human Uterine Artery from Full-Term Pregnancies

The aim of this study was to determine the roles of ET-1 and NO on uterine blood flow in pregnancy. Uterine arteries were isolated from 17 nonpregnant and 12 pregnant women. Nonpregnant group included patients with median age of 48.6⁑2.3 years who underwent hysterectomy, because of myoma. Pregnant group included patients with median age of 31.3⁑1.4 years undergoing cesarean delivery. ET-1 and ET-2 induced concentration-dependent contraction in isolated nonpregnant and pregnant... -
Higher Expression of TRPM7 Channels in Murine Mature B Lymphocytes than Immature Cells
JinKyoungKim, JaeHongKo, JooHyunNam, Ji-EunWoo, KyeongMinMin, YungEEarm, SungJoonKim 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2005, Vol.9 No.2 1 69-76 (8 pages)
The stimulation of B cell receptors (BCR) by ligation with antibodies did not change the amplitude of MIC current. Also, increase of extracellular [Mg2]c to enhance the Mg2 influx did not affect the BCR ligation-induced death of WEHI-231 cells. Although the level of TRPM7 was not directly related with the cell death of immature B cells, the remarkable difference of TRPM7 might indicate a fundamental change in the permeability to divalent cations during the development of B cells.
