Lysin motif (LysM) proteins are reported to be necessary for the virulence and immune response suppression in many herbaceous plant pathogens, while far less is documented in woody plant pathogens. In this study, we preliminarily characterized the molecular function of a LysM protein LtLysM1 in woody plant pathogen Lasiodiplodia theobromae. Transcriptional profiles revealed that LtLysM1 is highly expressed at infectious stages, especially at 36 and 48 hours post inoculation. Amino acid sequence... -
Bacteriophage Usage for Bacterial Disease Management and Diagnosis in Plants
The Plant Pathology Journal 14 Pages
2 204-217 (14 pages)
In nature, plants are always under the threat of pests and diseases. Pathogenic bacteria are one of the ma- jor pathogen types to cause diseases in diverse plants, resulting in negative effects on plant growth and crop yield. Chemical bactericides and antibiotics have been used as major approaches for controlling bacterial plant diseases in the field or greenhouse. However, the appearance of resistant bacteria to common antibiot- ics and bactericides as well as their potential negative effects... -
Occurrence of Leaf Spot Disease Caused by Alternaria crassa (Sacc.) Rands on Jimson Weed and Potential Additional Host Plants in Algeria

7 179-184 (6 pages)
A leaf spot pathogen Alternaria sp. was recovered from jimson weed, tomato, parsley, and coriander collected during surveys of blight diseases on Solanaceae and Apiaceae in Algeria. This species produced large conidi- al body generating long apical beaks that tapered grad- ually from a wide base to a narrow tip and short co- nidiophores originating directly from the agar surface. This species exhibited morphological traits similar to that reported for Alternaria crassa. The identification of... -
Characterization of Nivalenol-Producing Fusarium asiaticum That Causes Cereal Head Blight in Korea
Ja Yeong Jang, Seul Gi Baek, Jung-Hye Choi, Sosoo Kim, Jeomsoon Kim, Da-Woon Kim, Sung-Hwan Yun, Theresa Lee 한국식물병리학회 The Plant Pathology Journal 10 Pages
1 543-552 (10 pages)
Fusarium asiaticum of the F. graminearum species complex causes head blight in small-grain cereals. The nivalenol (NIV) chemotypes of F. asiaticum is more common than the deoxynivalenol (DON) chemotypes of F. asiaticum or F. graminearum in Korea. To understand the prevalence of F. asiaticum–NIV in Korean cereals, we characterized the biological traits of 80 cereal isolates of F. asiaticum producing NIV or 3-acetyl-deoxynivalenol (3-ADON), and 54 F. graminearum with 3-ADON or... -
Stress Tolerance and Virulence-Related Roles of Lipopolysaccharide in Burkholderia glumae

6 445-458 (14 pages)
The lipopolysaccharide (LPS) composed of lipid A, core, and O-antigen is the fundamental constituent of the outer membrane in gram-negative bacteria. This study was conducted to investigate the roles of LPS in Burkholderia glumae, the phytopathogen causing bacterial panicle blight and seedling rot in rice. To study the roles of the core oligosaccharide (OS) and the Oantigen region, mutant strains targeting the waaC and the wbiFGHI genes were generated. The LPS profile was greatly affected by... -
In Vitro and In Vivo Inhibitory Effects of Gaseous Chlorine Dioxide against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. batatas Isolated from Stored Sweetpotato: Study II
Ye Ji Lee, Jin-Ju Jeong, Hyunjung Jin, Wook Kim, Young Chull Jeun, Gyeong-Dan Yu, Ki Deok Kim 한국식물병리학회 The Plant Pathology Journal 8 Pages
5 437-444 (8 pages)
Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) has been widely used as an effective disinfectant to control fungal contamination during postharvest crop storage. In this study, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. batatas SP-f6 from the black rot symptom of sweetpotato was isolated and identified using phylogenetic analysis of elongation factor 1-α gene; we further examined the in vitro and in vivo inhibitory activities of ClO2 gas against the fungus. In the in vitro medium tests, fungal population was significantly inhibited... -
Fusarium Species from Sorghum in Thailand
Nik M. I. Mohamed Nor, Baharuddin Salleh, John F. Leslie The Plant Pathology Journal 12 Pages
2 301-312 (12 pages)
Sorghum is the fifth most important cereal worldwide, spreading from Africa throughout the world. It is particularly important in the semi-arid tropics due to its drought tolerance, and when cultivated in Southeast Asia commonly occurs as a second crop during the dry season. We recovered Fusarium from sorghum in Thailand and found F. proliferatum, F. thapsinum and F. verticillioides most frequently, and intermittent isolates of F. sacchari and F. beomiforme. The relatively high frequencies of F.... -
Characterization of Burkholderia glumae Putative Virulence Factor 11 (PVF11) via Yeast Two-Hybrid Interaction and Phenotypic Analysis
Juyun Kim, Namgyu Kim, Mohamed Mannaa, Hyun-Hee Lee, Jong-Seong Jeon, Young-Su Seo 한국식물병리학회 The Plant Pathology Journal 7 Pages
9 280-286 (7 pages)
In this study, PVF11 was selected among 20 candidate pathogenesis-related genes in Burkholderia glumae based on its effect on virulence to rice. PVF11 was found to interact with several plant defense-related WRKY proteins as evidenced through yeast-two hybrid analysis (Y2H). Moreover, PVF11 showed interactions with abiotic and biotic stress response-related rice proteins, as shown by genome-wide Y2H screening employing PVF11 and a cDNA library from B. glumaeinfected rice. To confirm the effect... -

Isolation and Identification of Fungal Species from the Insect Pest Tribolium castaneum in Rice Processing Complexes in Korea
Tae-Seong Yun, Sook-Young Park, Jihyun Yu, Yujin Hwang, Ki-Jeong Hong 한국식물병리학회 The Plant Pathology Journal 11 Pages
2 356-366 (11 pages)
The red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, is one of the most common and economically important pests of stored cereal products worldwide. Furthermore, these beetles can act as vectors for several fungal post-harvest diseases. In this study, we collected T. castaneum from 49 rice processing complexes (RPCs) nationwide during 2016-2017 and identified contaminating fungal species on the surface of the beetles. Five beetles from each region were placed on potato dextrose agar media or Fusarium...
