Transcriptome Analysis of the Barley-Rhynchosporium secalis Interaction
The Plant Pathology Journal 7 Pages
10 425-431 (7 pages)
large number of plant ESTs, which are induced at different time points, an amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) display of complementary DNA (cDNA) was utilized. Transcriptional changes of 140 ESTs were observed, of which 19 have no previously described function. Functional annotation of the transcripts revealed a variety of infection-induced host genes encoding classical pathogenesis-related (PR) or genes that play a role in the signal transduction pathway. The expression analyses by a... -
Analysis of in planta Expressed Orphan Genes in the Rice Blast Fungus Magnaporthe oryzae
The Plant Pathology Journal 8 Pages
4 367-374 (8 pages)
of such “orphan” genes remains unclear, they are thought to be involved in species-specific adaptive processes. Here, we analyzed seven orphan genes (MoSPC1 to MoSPC7) prioritized based on in planta expressed sequence tag data in the rice blast fungus, Magnaporthe oryzae. Expression analysis using qRT-PCR confirmed the expression of four genes (MoSPC1, MoSPC2, MoSPC3 and MoSPC7) during plant infection. However, individual deletion mutants of these four genes did not differ from the wild-type... -
Involvement of the OsMKK4-OsMPK1 Cascade and its Downstream Transcription Factor OsWRKY53 in the Wounding Response in Rice
The Plant Pathology Journal 10 Pages
7 168-177 (10 pages)
Plant has possessed diverse stress signals from outside and maintained its fitness. Out of such plant responses, it is well known that mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade plays important role in wounding and pathogen attack in most dicot plants. However, little is understood about its role in wounding response for the economically important monocot rice plant. In this study, therefore, the involvement of MAPK was investigated to understand the wounding signaling pathway in rice. The... -
Note : Open Access ; A Simple Method for Assessing Severity of Common Root Rot on Barley
The Plant Pathology Journal 3 Pages
12 451-453 (3 pages)
Common root rot caused by Cochliobolus sativus is a serious disease of barley. A simple and reliable method for assessing this disease would enhance our capacity in identifying resistance sources and developing resistant barley cultivars. In searching for such a method, a conidial suspension of C. sativus was dropped onto sterilized elongated subcrown internodes and incubated in sandwich filter paper using polyethylene transparent envelopes. Initial disease symptoms were easily detected after... -
Open Access : Enhanced Biological Control of Phytophthora Blight of Pepper by Biosurfactant-Producing Pseudomonas
The Plant Pathology Journal 9 Pages
7 418-426 (9 pages)
significantly enhanced biological control activity, resulting in a reduction of disease level ranging from 56.8 to 81.1%. ASM + mefenoxam was the most effective treatment while ASM alone was less effective in both bioassays. These results indicate that our Pseudomonas fluorescens strains (6L10, 6ba6 and 3ss9) that have biosurfactant-producing abilities are effective against P. capsici on pepper, and enhanced disease suppression could be achieved when they were used in combination with olive oil. -
Population Structure of the Gibberella fujikuroi Species Complex Associated with Rice and Corn in Korea
The Plant Pathology Journal 7 Pages
2 357-363 (7 pages)
the Gibberella fujikuroi species (Gf) complex are commonly associated with rice and corn, not only causing serious diseases, but also producing fumonisins, a group of mycotoxins harmful to animals and humans. To characterize the population structure of the putative fumonisin-producing Gf complex in Korea, we obtained 276 candidate isolates from rice and corn harvested in 2009 and 2010 by diagnostic polymerase chain reaction with several specific primer sets. Phylogenetic trees were constructed... -
Identification and Transcriptional Analysis of Priming Genes in Arabidopsis thaliana Induced by Root Colonization with Pseudomonas chlororaphis O6
The Plant Pathology Journal 8 Pages
9 272-279 (8 pages)
Root colonization of Arabidopsis thaliana with Pseudomonas chlororaphis O6 induces systemic tolerance against diverse pathogens, as well as drought and salt stresses. In this study, we demonstrated that 11 genes in the leaves were up-regulated, and 5 genes were down-regulated as the result of three- to five-days root colonization by P. chlororaphis O6. The identified priming genes were involved in cell signaling, transcription, protein synthesis, and degradation. In addition, expression of... -
Suppression of UDP-glycosyltransferase-coding Arabidopsis thaliana UGT74E2 Gene Expression Leads to Increased Resistance to Psuedomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 Infection
The Plant Pathology Journal 13 Pages
10 170-182 (13 pages)
25% of all Arabidopsis thaliana genes (www.genevestigator.com). Seventeen genes which are early responsive to salicylic acid (SA) treatment as well as pathogen infection were selected and their T-DNA insertion mutants were obtained from SALK institute. To elucidate the role of each gene in defense response, bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (Pst) DC3000 was inoculated onto individual T-DNA insertion mutants. Four mutants exhibited decreased resistance and five mutants displayed... -
Aggressiveness in Plasmopara halstedii (sunflower downy mildew)
The Plant Pathology Journal 6 Pages
2 110-115 (6 pages)
Aggressiveness was studied in seven Plasmopara halstedii (sunflower downy mildew) pathotypes: 100, 300, 304, 314, 704, 710 and 714. Aggressiveness criteria including percentage infection, latent period, sporulation density and reduction of hypocotyl length (dwarfing) were analysed in one sunflower inbred line showing a high level of quantitative resistance. Genetic relationships were detected between the seven pathotypes using 12 ESTderived markers. Pathotypes 100, 300, 304 and 314 were... -
Regulation of Pathogenesis by Light in Cercospora zeae-maydis: An Updated Perspective
The Plant Pathology Journal 7 Pages
1 103-109 (7 pages)
The fungal genus Cercospora is one of the most ubiquitous groups of plant pathogenic fungi, and gray leaf spot caused by C. zeae-maydis is one of the most widespread and damaging foliar diseases of maize in the world. While light has been implicated as a critical environmental regulator of pathogenesis in C. zeae-maydis, the relationship between light and the development of disease is not fully understood. Recent discoveries have provided new insights into how light influences pathogenesis and...
