During the development of hepatic encephalopathy after thioacetamide (TAA) injection to rat, EEG was recorded at two different states: without or with tactile stimulation of tail at regular intervals. Calculations based on the spectral and band analysis were used. The changes in the power spectra and bands were examined in 3 different behavioral stages: normal, mild ataxia and severe ataxia. In normal rats, the stimulation produced the increase in the power of the theta (3.5 ~ 8 Hz) and the... -

of spinal sensory neurons in segments adjacent to degeneration sites induced by EAA are altered following these morphological changes. Intraspinal injections of quisqualic acid (QA) produced neuronal degeneration and spinal cavitation of gray matter. The severity of lesions was significantly attenuated by pretreatment with a non-NMDA antagonist NBQX. In extracellular single unit recordings, dorsal horn neurons in QA injected animal showed the increased mechanosensitivity, which included a shift... -

Acetylcholine (ACh) activates the inwardly rectifying muscarinic K+ channel in rat atrial cells via pertussis toxin (PTX)-sensitive G-protein (Gk) coupled with the muscarinic receptor (mAChR). Although this K+ (KACh) channel function has reported to be modulated by the phosphorylation process, a kinase and phosphatase involved in these processes are still unclear. Since either PKA or PKC was not effective on this ATP-modulation, the present study examined the possible involvement of the protein... -

The objective of the present study was to characterize the role of adenosine in regulation of ATP-sensitive K+ channel (KATP channel) activity in isolated rabbit ventricular myocytes using the patch clamp technique. Internal adenosine had little effects on KaTr channel activity. In an outside-out patch with intrapipette GTP and ATP, external adenosine stimulated KATP channel activity. In an inside-out Patch with intrapipette adenosine, ATP reduced KATP channel activity, and GTP stimulated KATP... -

This study was designed 1) to develop a hypertensive animal model in which the blood pressures (BPs) of symmetric regions (right and left upper extremities) are significantly different and 2) to test the effect of BP per se on the contractility and endothelium-dependent relaxation of vascular smooth muscle. Rabbits were anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital and ventilated with room air via animal respirator. The transverse aorta was exposed through the left second intercostal space and the... -

The nonapeptide bradykinin has been shown to exhibit an array of biological activities including relaxation/contraction of various smooth muscles. In order to investigate the effects of bradykinin on the contractility and the electrical activity of antral circular muscle of guinea-pig stomach, the isometric contraction and membrane potential were recorded. Also, using standard patch clamp technique, the Ca2+-activated K currents were recorded to observe the change in cytosolic Ca2+... -

The presence of a calcium current (iCa2+) passed via a specific channel was examined in the unfertilized hamster egg using the whole-cell voltage clamp technique. Pure inward current was isolated using a Ca2+-rich pipette solution containing 10 mM TEA. This current was independent of external Na+ and was highly sensitive to the Ca2+ concentration in the bathing solution, indicating that the inward current is carried by Ca2+. The maximal amplitude was -4.12±0.58nA (n=12) with 10mM Ca2+ at -3OmV... -

Cs+. A Ca2+-activated nonselective cation current was observed in both the depolarized and hyperpolarized potential ranges. And it was blocked by replacement of extracellular Na+ with N-methylglucamine (NMG) or extracellular application of Cd2+. Ca2+-activated Cl- current was revealed in the whole voltage range and was blocked by niflumic acid. These results indicate that at least three kinds of Ca2+-activated ionic currents exist in smooth muscle cells from rabbit superior mesenteric artery. -

addition of N-phenylanthranilic acid and niflumic acid which are known anion channel blockers abolished the caffeine induced current. Intracellular application of a high concentration of EGTA also abolished this current. Application of c-AMP, c-GMP, heparin, or AIF-4 made no remarkable changes to this current. Sodium replacement with the impermeable cation N-methylglucamine or with Cd2+ rarely affected this current. From the above results it is suggested that the caffeine induced current was a... -

The present study was carried out to characterize the functional properties of spinomesencephalic tract (SMT) neurons in the lumbar spinal cord of urethane anesthetized rats. Extracellular single unit recordings were made from neurons antidromically activated by stimulation of the midbrain area, including the deep layers of superior colliculus, periaqueductal gray and midbrain reticular formation. Recording sites were located in laminae I-VII of spinal cord segments of L2-L5. Receptive field...
