Economical Sweating Function in Africans: Quantitative Sudomotor Axon Reflex Test
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 5 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2004, Vol.8 No.1 4 21-25 (5 pages)
People in tropics have the ability to tolerate heat by residential permanence in the tropics. Previously, we have shown that African and Thai subjects who lived for whole their lives in only their respective countries sweat less under hot conditions than South Koreans who also lived whole their lives in Korea. The difference in sweating responses was attributed to the dissimilar central and peripheral sweating mechanisms operating in people from both groups. In the present study, acetylcholine... -
Carrageenan-Induced Hyperalgesia Is Partially Alleviated by Endomorphin-1 Locally Delivered into Inflamed Paws in Rat

stimuli with von Frei filaments before and after the injection. Carrageenan-injected rats showed typical inflammatory hyperalgesic signs and decrease of withdrawal threshold, peaked at 3 to 6 hours after the injection and lasted more than 3 days. Endomorphin-1 was intraplantarly injected with carrageenan, simultaneously or 3∼4 hours after carrageenan. Simultaneous injection of endomorphin-1 with carrageenan significantly reduced hyperalgesia and thd analgesic effect was prolonged up to 8 hours.... -
Normal Anxiety, Fear and Depression-related Behaviors in Mice Lacking α-Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.6 4 299-304 (6 pages)
Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) expressing neurons are distributed widely throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems. Due to its distribution and pharmacological studies, CGRP has been implicated to be involved in anxiety, fear and depression. In this study, αCGRP-knockout mice were used to assess the consequences of removing this neuropeptide to the mice behaviors. αCGRP-knockout mice performed equally as well as wild type mice in the light-dark transition test and in the... -
Noradrenergic Modulation of Spontaneous Inhibitory Postsynaptic Currents in the Hypothalamic Paraventricular Nucleus
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 10 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.2 2 71-80 (10 pages)
Previous studies have suggested that brain stem noradrenergic inputs differentially modulate neurons in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN). Here, we compared the effects of norepinephrine (NE) on spontaneous GABAergic inhibitory postsynaptic currents (sIPSCs) in identified PVN neurons using slice patch technique. In 17 of 18 type I neurons, NE (30∼100μM) reversibly decreased sIPSC frequency to 41⁑7% of the baseline value (4.4⁑0.8 Hz, p<0.001). This effect was blocked by yohimbine... -
Muscarine M2 Receptor-mediated Presynaptic Inhibition of GABAergic Transmission in Rat Meynert Neurons
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.2 1 63-70 (8 pages)
Cholinergic modulation of GABAergic spontaneous miniature inhibitory postsynaptic currents (mIPSCs) by the activation of muscarine receptors was investigated in mechanically dissociated rat nucleus basalis of the Meynert neurons using the conventional whole-cell patch recording configuration. Muscarine (10μM) reversibly and concentration-dependently decreased mIPSC frequency without affecting the current amplitude distribution. Muscarine action on GABAergic mIPSCs was completely blocked by... -
Changes of Afferent Transmission to the SI Cortex by Transient Co-Stimulation of Receptive Field Center and Outside in Anesthetized Rats
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2001, Vol.5 No.1 4 27-32 (6 pages)
We have characterized the aftereffects of impulse activities on the transmission of afferent sensory to the primary somatosensory (SI) cortex of the anesthetized rats (n=22). Following conditioning stimulation (CS, 10 sec, either 5 Hz or 200 Hz) to the receptive field (RF), quantitative determination of the changes of afferent sensory transmission was done by generating post-stimulus time histogram of unit response to the testing stimulation (TS, at 0.5 Hz) to the RF center (RFC) for 60 min. In... -
Effect of Propofol, an Intravenous Anesthetic Agent, on KATP Channels of Pancreatic β-cells in Rats
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2000, Vol.4 No.1 4 25-31 (7 pages)
ATP-sensitive potassium channels (KATP channels) play an important role in insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells. We have investigated the effect of propofol on KATP channels in cultured single pancreatic beta cells of rats. Channel activity was recorded from membrane patches using the patch-clamp technique. In the inside-out configuration bath-applied propofol inhibited the KATP channel activities in a dose-dependent manner. The half-maximal inhibition dose (ED50) was 48.6⁑8.4μM... -

data have not been accumulated yet. We performed a series of experiments to elucidate the possible neural mechanisms as to chemical stimuli such as formalin, capsaicin and ATP. Single unit activity of wide dynamic range (WDR) neurons and high threshold cells were recorded extracellularly from the lumbosacral enlargement of cat spinal cord before and after chemical stimulation to its receptive field (RF). Each chemical substance - formalin (20μl, 4%), capsaicin (33 mM) or Mg-ATP (5 mM)- was... -
Hemorrhage- and Restraint-induced Analgesia in Male and Female Conscious Rats

A significant increase in pain threshold on bleeding was shown and the increase was larger in male group than in female group. The tail flick latency (TFL) on bleeding after AVP antagonist injection into the ventricle was decreased and the decrease was greater in male rats than in female rats. Castration resulted in a significant reduction of TFL. This effect was reversed by treatment with sex hormones. TFL was decreased during hemorrhage in castrated rats. This response was opposite to that in... -

of NP within hypothalamic preoptic area (POA). In the chronic exposure, the luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), and testosterone in serum were decreased but prolactin (PRL) concentrations were increased. The LH, FSH, and testosterone in serum were decreased through the direct infusion of NP into POA, while there was no difference in mean serum prolactin between NP and control groups. These observations suggest that NP as endocrine disruptor has modulatory effects on...
