Screening and Histopathological Characterization of Korean Carrot Lines for Resistance to the Root-Knot Nematode Meloidogyne incognita
The Plant Pathology Journal 7 Pages
9 75-81 (7 pages)
In total, 170 carrot lines developed in Korea were screened for resistance to Meloidogyne incognita race 1 to select parental genetic resources useful for the development of nematode-resistant carrot cultivars. Using the gall index (GI), gall formation was examined on carrot roots inoculated with approximately 1,000 second-stage juveniles of the nematode 7 weeks after inoculation. Sixty-one carrot lines were resistant (GI ≤ 1.0), while the other 109 were susceptible (GI > 1.0) with... -
Research Articles : β-Amino-n-butyric Acid Regulates Seedling Growth and Disease Resistance of Kimchi Cabbage
The Plant Pathology Journal 12 Pages
9 305-316 (12 pages)
Non-protein amino acid, β-amino-n-butyric acid (BABA), has been involved in diverse physiological processes including seedling growth, stress tolerance and disease resistance of many plant species. In the current study, treatment of kimchi cabbage seedlings with BABA significantly reduced primary root elongation and cotyledon development in a dose-dependent manner, which adverse effects were similar to the plant response to exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) application. BABA was synergistically... -
Biocontrol Characteristics of Bacillus Species in Suppressing Stem Rot of Grafted Cactus Caused by Bipolaris cactivora
The Plant Pathology Journal 10 Pages
5 42-51 (10 pages)
isolates significantly inhibited the conidial germination and mycelial growth of the pathogen with no significant difference between the two, of which the inhibitory efficacies varied depending on the cultural conditions such as temperature, nutritional compositions and concentrations. Light and electron microscopy of the pathogen treated with the bacterial isolates showed the inhibition of spore germination with initial malformation of germ tubes and later formation of circlelike vesicles with... -
Research Notes : Mannitol Amendment as a Carbon Source in a Bean-based Formulation Enhances Biocontrol Efficacy of a 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol-producing Pseudomonas sp. NJ134 Against Tomato Fusarium Wilt
The Plant Pathology Journal 6 Pages
14 390-395 (6 pages)
Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum has become a serious problem world-wide and relies heavily on chemical fungicides. We selected Pseudomonas sp. NJ134 to develop an effective biocontrol strategy. This strain shows strong antagonistic activity against F. oxysporum. Biochemical analyses of ethyl-acetate extracts of NJ134 culture filtrates showed that 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (DAPG) was the major compound inhibiting in vitro growth of F. oxysporum. DAPG production was greatly enhanced in... -
Potential for Augmentation of Fruit Quality by Foliar Application of Bacilli Spores on Apple Tree
The Plant Pathology Journal 6 Pages
9 164-169 (6 pages)
Previous studies have addressed the management of phyllosphere pathogens by leaf and root-associated microbes. The present study evaluated the effect of the foliar application of three strains of Bacillus spp. on plant growth and fruit quality. The application of a bacilli spore preparation significantly improved leaf growth parameters such as leaf thickness and photosynthesis capacity, indicating that bacilli treatment directly promoted leaf growth. In addition, foliar treatment resulted in an... -
Effect of Acibenzolar-S-methyl and Rahnella aquatilis (Ra39) on Chitinase and β-1, 3-glucanase Activities and Disease Resistance of Apple Plants
The Plant Pathology Journal 7 Pages
9 63-69 (7 pages)
The effect of Acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM) and Rahnella aquatilis Ra39 against apple fire blight disease caused by Erwinia amylovora were tested as a possible alternative to streptomycin. In vitro studies, no inhibition effect against the pathogen was found when ASM was tested. Under greenhouse conditions, application of R. aquatilis Ra39 with the highly susceptible M26 rootstock resulted in a marked disease suppression. Application of ASM and strain Ra39 caused a high decrease of the disease, 82%... -
Ecological Factors Influencing Severity of Cashew Fusarium Wilt Disease in Tanzania
Stanslaus A. Lilai, Fortunus A. Kapinga, Wilson A. Nene, William V. Mbasa, Donatha D. Tibuhwa 12 Pages
1 49-60 (12 pages)
Cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) is an important cash crop in Tanzania as a source of income to cashew growers and provides foreign exchange for the country. Despite its significance, the crop is threatened by fast spreading disease known as cashew Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum. Field assessment and laboratory tests were conducted to determine incidences of the disease, severity, ecological factors that influence them and explored the pathogen host specificity in six cashew... -
Development of a Multiplex Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction Assay for the Simultaneous Detection of Three Viruses in Leguminous Plants
Chung Youl Park, Hyun-Geun Min, Hong-Kyu Lee, Rameswor Maharjan, Youngnam Yoon, Su-Heon Lee 한국식물병리학회 식물병연구 5 Pages
15 348-352 (5 pages)
A multiplex reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (mRT-PCR) assay was developed for the detection of Clover yellow vein virus (ClYVV), Peanut mottle virus (PeMoV), and Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), which were recently reported to infect soybean and azuki bean in Korea. Species-specific primer sets were designed for the detection of each virus, and their specificity and sensitivity were tested using mixed primer sets. From among the designed primer sets, two combinations were... -
Current Status of Cashew Leaf and Nut Blight Disease (Cryptosporiopsis spp.) and Screening of Elite Cashew Hybrids Developed in 1996 and 1998 against the Disease in Eastern and Southern Tanzania
Dadili Japhet Majune, Peter Albert Masawe, Ernest Rashid Mbega 한국식물병리학회 식물병연구 11 Pages
3 265-275 (11 pages)
Cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) is an export crop and source of income in Tanzania. However, its productivity is challenged by insect pests and diseases. Cashew Leaf and Nut Blight Disease (CLNBD) caused by Cryptosporipsis spp. has been cited as one of the most devastating diseases in Tanzania. Studies were conducted to investigate incidences and severities of CLNBD on cashew in farmers’ fields and elite cashew hybrids developed in 1996 and 1998 in eastern and southern zones of Tanzania.... -
