Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 20 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2017, Vol.11 No.1 2 21-40 (20 pages)
This study investigated children’s and early childhood educators’ perspectives on the impact of a sound amplification system in a preschool setting. The sample included 69 children aged 3-5 years and nine early childhood educators from a preschool in regional Australia. Children completed selfreport booklets, rating how well they could hear in group time situations prior to and after the implementation of a sound amplification system. Early childhood educators completed an adapted version of... -
The Continuing Influence of Froebel’s Kindergarten System in Current Early Childhood Education in the USA and South Korea
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 16 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.3 6 125-140 (16 pages)
We (1) describe the origin of the kindergarten system invented by Froebel, (2) explain how Froebel’s kindergarten system has influenced the kindergarten system in the USA and South Korea, and (3) offer conclusive statements and implications about the application of Froebel’s original thoughts on the kindergarten system in both countries. Four objectives of this paper are: (1) to understand the original ideas of the kindergarten system invented by Froebel, (2) to review how Froebel’s... -
The Complexity of Preschool Children’s Dramatic Play Behaviour and Play Styles in Australia: A Mixed Methods Study
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 22 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.2 5 71-92 (22 pages)
Dramatic play is recognised as an important source of learning and development for preschool children, yet there are increasing reports that the quality of dramatic play is declining. This paper aims to report on the findings of a mixed method study that examined the constructs of Australian preschool children’s dramatic play behaviour. Video observations and the Smilansky Scale for the Evaluation of Dramatic and Socio-Dramatic Play (Smilanksy & Shefatya, 1990) were used with 101 preschool... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 14 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2018, Vol.12 No.2 5 79-92 (14 pages)
As part of a cluster randomized controlled trial (Bundy et al., 2017), the after school-hours activities of 5-7 year old children were recorded by parents and other adult carers on four consecutive weekdays between 3:30pm-7:00pm. Records of time use showed most time was spent indoors in activities involving low levels of physical activity. The most-frequently-recorded activity was screen time, accounting for approximately one quarter of all activities. Higher levels of physical activity were... -

with pedagogical skill, it is important for each practitioner to become aware of their own way of thinking and be willing to undergo an authentic noological revolution (Bateson, 1976), reviewing their own relationship with the environment in an educational key. Starting from these premises, the participatory research focuses on the role of the early childhood practitioner, the emotions they feel, and the meanings they give to the outdoor spaces of the educational facility they inhabit in on a... -

of the outdoor environment in a way that encourages risk-taking and builds resilience through problem solving. The collaborative achievement of the activities between the pre- school teacher and the fouryear- old children are discussed as an important and necessary aspect of the interactions, which we suggest may represent physical sustained shared thinking, for supporting wellbeing whilst building resilience and risk-taking. Implications for future practice are considered with regard to... -
BETTER THAN Bubble WRAP: Do We “Over Regulate and Over Protect” Children at the Expense of Them Learning How to “Take Risks”?

that is perceived to be safer than it has ever been. Environment and product modification means we have safer cars, homes, workplaces and play areas. Legislation and policy approaches have been introduced to regulate and enforce safe practices. However, in some cases this has brought about an over regulated and over protective societal change. Experiences and tasks once enjoyed by children are now often regarded as dangerous and irresponsible. The freedom of children to experience life in a way... -

Much is known about the skills that young children need to be successful readers. The literature identifies two kinds of skills that are key to young children’s language and literacy development: meaning-related skills and code-related skills. This article focuses on one of these key skills: meaning-related skills.
