Sustained K+ Outward Currents are Sensitive to Intracellular Heteropodatoxin2 in CA1 Neurons of Organotypic Cultured Hippocampi of Rats
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2012, Vol.16 No.5 9 343-348 (6 pages)
Blocking or regulating K+ channels is important for investigating neuronal functions in mammalian brains, because voltage-dependent K+ channels (Kv channels) play roles to regulate membrane excitabilities for synaptic and somatic processings in neurons. Although a number of toxins and chemicals are useful to change gating properties of Kv channels, specific effects of each toxin on a particular Kv subunit have not been sufficiently demonstrated in neurons yet. In this study, we tested... -
Generation of CD2+CD8+ NK Cells from c-Kit+ Bone Marrow Cells in Porcine
KyuHeeLim, Ji-HuiHan, YoonSeokRoh, BumseokKim, Jung-KeeKwon, MyoungJoYou, HoJaeHan, SohailEjaz6, Chang-WonKang, Jong-HoonKim 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages

Natural killer (NK) cells provide one of the initial barriers of cellular host defense against pathogens, in particular intracellular pathogens. Because bone marrow-derived hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), lymphoid protenitors, can give rise to NK cells, NK ontogeny has been considered to be exclusively lymphoid. Here, we show that porcine c-kit+ bone marrow cells (c-kit+ BM cells) develop into NK cells in vitro in the presence of various cytokines [interleukin (IL)-2, IL-7, IL-15, IL-21, stem... -
Effects of Protopanaxatriol-Ginsenoside Metabolites on Rat N-Methyl-D-Aspartic Acid Receptor-Mediated Ion Currents

weight glycosides found in ginseng that exhibit neuroprotective effects through inhibition of N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) receptor channel activity. Ginsenosides, like other natural compounds, are metabolized by gastric juices and intestinal microorganisms to produce ginsenoside metabolites. However, little is known about how ginsenoside metabolites regulate NMDA receptor channel activity. In the present study, we investigated the effects of ginsenoside metabolites, such as compound K (CK),... -

of proinflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1Ղ, tumor necrosis factor-Ձ and cyclooxygenase-2 mRNA in the hippocampus. These results demonstrated that PA and BER had significant neuroprotective effects against neuronal impairment and memory dysfunction caused by scopolamine in rats. These results suggest that PA and BER may be useful as therapeutic agents for improving cognitive functioning by stimulating cholinergic enzyme activity and alleviating inflammatory responses. -
Requirement of Pretone by Thromboxane A2 for Hypoxic Pulmonary Vasoconstriction in Precision-cut Lung Slices of Rat
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2012, Vol.16 No.1 9 59-64 (6 pages)
Hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV) is physiologically important response for preventing mismatching between ventilation and perfusion in lungs. The HPV of isolated pulmonary arteries (HPV-PA) usually require a partial pretone by thromboxane agonist (U46619). Because the HPV of ventilated/perfused lungs (HPV-lung) can be triggered without pretone conditioning, we suspected that a putative tissue factor might be responsible for the pretone of HPV. Here we investigated whether HPV can be also... -
Bile Acid Inhibition of N-type Calcium Channel Currents from Sympathetic Ganglion Neurons

a charge carrier. Cholic acid (CA, 10-6 M) that is relatively hydrophilic thus less cytotoxic was included in the pipette solution. CA suppressed the open probability of N-type Ca2+ channel, which appeared to be due to an increase in null (no activity) sweeps. For example, the proportion of null sweep in the presence of CA was ∼40% at +40 mV as compared with ∼8% in the control recorded without CA. Other single channel properties including slope conductance, single channel current amplitude,... -
Spontaneous Oscillatory Rhythm in Retinal Activities of Two Retinal Degeneration (rd1 and rd10) Mice
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2011, Vol.15 No.6 13 415-422 (8 pages)
Previously, we reported that besides retinal ganglion cell (RGC) spike, there is ∼10 Hz oscillatory rhythmic activity in local field potential (LFP) in retinal degeneration model, rd1 mice. The more recently identified rd10 mice have a later onset and slower rate of photoreceptor degeneration than the rd1 mice, providing more therapeutic potential. In this study, before adapting rd10 mice as a new animal model for our electrical stimulation study, we investigated electrical characteristics of... -
A Computational Model of the Temperature-dependent Changes in Firing Patterns in Aplysia Neurons
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 12 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2011, Vol.15 No.6 8 371-382 (12 pages)
We performed experiments using Aplysia neurons to identify the mechanism underlying the changes in the firing patterns in response to temperature changes. When the temperature was gradually increased from 11oC to 31oC the firing patterns changed sequentially from the silent state to beating, doublets, beating-chaos, bursting-chaos, square-wave bursting, and bursting-oscillation patterns. When the temperature was decreased over the same temperature range, these sequential changes in the firing... -
The Protective Effect of Black Ginseng Against Transient Focal Ischemia-induced Neuronal Damage in Rats
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2011, Vol.15 No.6 3 333-338 (6 pages)
Black ginseng (BG) has been widely used as herbal treatment for improving physiological function. In order to investigate the neuroprotective action of this herbal medicine, we examined the influence of BG on the learning and memory of rats using the Morris water maze, and we studied the effects of BG on the central cholinergic system and neural nitric oxide synthesis in the hippocampus of rats with neuronal and cognitive impairment. After middle cerebral artery occlusion was applied for 2h, the... -
Inhibitory Actions of HERG Currents by the Immunosuppressant Drug Cyclosporin A
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages

of HERG channels was voltage-dependent, with a steep increase over the voltage range of the channel opening. However, the inhibition exhibited voltage independence over the voltage range of fully activated channels. CsA blocked the HERG channels predominantly in the open and inactivated states rather than in the closed state. Results of the present study suggest that CsA acts directly on the HERG channel as an open-channel blocker, and it acts independently of its effect on calcineurin activity.
