Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 18 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2021, Vol.15 No.2 1 1-18 (18 pages)
30 kindergarten children who learn English as a second language from two kindergartens in Hong Kong were assessed and compared on measures of alphabet knowledge, concept of word, syllable, and phoneme awareness and word recognition ability. The results essentially replicated a previous study by Morris and support the proposed model. The results have implications for beginning reading instruction for children with English as the second language and future research in early literacy acquisition. -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 18 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2019, Vol.13 No.2 7 123-140 (18 pages)
Despite the growing evidence for the benefits of digital game-based learning (DGBL) in promoting learning in various contexts, the effects of DGBL on early English literacy learning for non-native speakers remains unknown. The present study examined the effectiveness of using DGBL in enhancing student learning in an early English literacy task for non-native speakers. In the experiment, 66 Malay pre-school students who were identified as having low literacy in English (determined using a... -

weeks based on observed target problem behaviors. Quantitative data were collected through the use of a researchermade checklist and qualitative data through observations. Paired t-test results determined that there was a significant difference in the decrease of children’s problem behaviors during free play when music and movement activities were implemented. This also has been confirmed by the observations with the children which also showed the improvement in their behaviors during free play... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 22 Pages

problems in the classroom. Selected background music tended to be of medium tempi, with or without lyrics, often calm and quiet, with medium or soft dynamics. Music choices related to the perceived mood of the music, children’s perceived preferences, and the music’s relationships to a chosen educational theme. The majority of teachers who used background music during free-play time reported that this was also helpful in the learning of songs or to support content-related curricular themes. -

time, on the tasks of number comparison, calculation, shifting, and inhibition but not on number line estimation. The components of executive function (shifting, inhibition, and working memory) showed different patterns of correlation to performance on number processing tasks across the early years of school. Findings could be used to enhance teachers’ understanding about the role of the cognitive processes employed by children in numeracy learning, and so inform teachers’ classroom practices. -
