The glutamate receptors (GluRs) are key receptors for modulatory synaptic events in the central nervous system. It has been reported that glutamate increases the intracellular Ca2 concentration ([Ca2]i) and induces cytotoxicity. In the present study, we investigated whether the glutamate-induced [Ca2]i increase was associated with the activation of ionotropic (iGluR) and metabotropic GluRs (mGluR) in substantia gelatinosa neurons, using spinal cord slice of juvenile rats... -
Effects of Noradrenaline on the Membrane Potential of Prostatic Neuroendocrine Cells of Rat

The prostate gland contains numerous neuroendocrine cells that are believed to influence the function of the prostate gland. Our recent study demonstrated the expression of both α1- and α2-ARs, signaling the release of stored Ca2 and the inhibition of N-type Ca2 channels, respectively, in rat prostate neuroendocrine cells (RPNECs). In this study, the effects of NA on the resting membrane potential (RMP) of RPNECs were investigated using a whole-cell patch clamp method. Fresh... -
Thiol-dependent Redox Mechanisms in the Modification of ATP-Sensitive Potassium Channels in Rabbit Ventricular Myocytes

N-ethylmaleimide (NEM), a substance that reacts with thiol groups of cystein residues in proteins, induced irreversible closure of the channel. The thiol oxidizing agents (DTNB, NEM) inhibited of the KATP channel only, when added to the cytoplasmic side. The results suggested that metabolism-induced changes in the thiol redox can also modulate KATP channel activity and that a modulatory site of thiol redox may be located on the cytoplasmic side of the KATP channel in rabbit ventricular myocytes. -
Identification of ATP-sensitive K+ Conductances in Male Rat Major Pelvic Ganglion Neurons

sympathetic neurons. The hyperpolarizing response to metabolic inhibition was partially blocked by glibenclamide. RT-PCR analysis revealed that MPG neurons mainly expressed the KATP channel subunits of Kir6.2 and SUR1. Our results suggest that MPG neurons have KATP channels, mainly formed by Kir6.2 and SUR1, with phenotype-specificity, and that the conductance through this channel in parasympathetic neurons may contribute to the changes in excitability during hypoxia and/or metabolic inhibition. -
Effects of Kanagawa Hemolysin on Blood Pressure and Arterial Tone in Rats

Kanagawa hemolysin (KH), an exotoxin produced from Kanagawa phenomenon-positive Vibrio parahemolyticus, has been shown to possess various biological activities including hemolysis, enterotoxicity, cytotoxicity, and cardiotoxicity. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of KH on the cardiovascular system and its mechanism, employing in vivo and in vitro experiments of the rat. Intracerebroventricular (icv) administration of 100 mHU KH produced a marked and continuous pressor effect... -
Role of Calmodulin in the Generation of Reactive Oxygen Species and Apoptosis Induced by Tamoxifen in HepG2 Human Hepatoma Cells
YongSooLee 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.4 3 187-192 (6 pages)
Tamoxifen, an antiestrogen, has previously been shown to induce apoptosis in HepG2 human hepatoblastoma cells through activation of the pathways independent of estrogen receptors, i.e., intracellular Ca2 increase and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, the mechanism of tamoxifen to link increased intracellular Ca2 to ROS generation is currently unknown. Thus, in this study we investigated the possible involvement of calmodulin, a Ca2 activated protein, and... -
The Gradient Model of the Rabbit Sinoatrial Node
H.Dobrzynski, M.Lei, S.A.Jones, M.K.Lancaster, M.R.Boyett 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 10 Pages

is a variable mix of atrial and sinoatrial node cells from the centre to the periphery. This review focuses on the cellular organisation of the rabbit sinoatrial node in terms of the expression of connexin (Cx40, Cx43 and Cx45), L-type Ca2 channel and Na-Ca2 exchanger proteins. These immunocytochemical data, together with morphological and electrophysiological data, obtained from the intact sinoatrial node and isolated sinoatrial node cells support the gradient model of the... -
Molecular Mechanism of Pancreatic Bicarbonate Secretion
MinGooLee, JeWooKim, KyungHwanKim, ShmuelMuallem 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.3 1 131-138 (8 pages)
Thanks to recent progress in availability of molecular and functional techniques it became possible to search for the basic molecular and cellular processes that mediate and control HCO3 and fluid secretion by the pancreatic duct. The coordinated action of various transporters on the luminal and basolateral membranes of polarized epithelial cells mediates the transepithelial HCO3 transport, which involves HCO3 absorption in the resting state and HCO3 secretion in the... -
Comparisons of Renoprotective Activities between White Ginseng Radix and Rootlet in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats with Diabetes
SungHyunChung, SungKwonKo, SeHoPark 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 5 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.1 9 57-61 (5 pages)
The renoprotective activities of white ginseng radix and rootlet were compared in spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) with diabetes. During oral administration of white ginseng radix (Ginseng Radix Alba, GRA) and white ginseng rootlet (Ginseng Radix Palva, GRP) for four weeks, arterial blood pressure and blood glucose levels were determined at every 10 days. In both GRA- and GRP-treatment groups, arterial blood pressures started to go down after 10 days of administration and maintained... -

effective doses of ACh is mediated by muscarinic M3 receptors, linked to pertussis toxin-insensitive GTP-binding proteins of the Gq/11 type. They activate phospholipase C, which hydrolyzes phosphatidylinositol bisphosphate (PIP2), producing inositol 1, 4, 5-trisphosphate (IP3) and DAG. IP3 causes release of intracellular Ca2 and formation of a Ca2-calmodulin complex, resulting in activation of myosin light chain kinase and contraction through a calmodulin-dependent pathway.
