Eye on the Future: Diverse Family Language Policy in Three Singaporean Malay Homes with Preschool Children
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 23 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2020, Vol.14 No.1 6 125-147 (23 pages)
interviews were conducted in 2013- 2014 and transcribed verbatim by a bilingual English-Malay transcriptionist. Although the mothers were of similar ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds, their home language practices were distinctly different. Their language practices reflected the beliefs, values, and feelings they ascribed to Malay, English, and Mandarin, languages their preschool-age children were exposed to as well as their ideas about language development and bilingualism in... -
Preschool Teachers’ Resilience and Their Readiness to Develop Resilience to Young Children in a Chinese Context
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 21 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2020, Vol.14 No.1 3 49-69 (21 pages)
Resilience is defined as a “positive adaption in the face of risk or adversity” (Wright, Masten, & Narayan, 2013). Both the teachers’ resilience and their readiness to develop preschool children’s resilience were examined in the Hong Kong context (n=196). Results from the K-means cluster analysis indicated that Hong Kong preschool teachers had a relatively high level of resilience, with family being a significant contributing factor. These teachers were generally ready to foster children’s... -
Supporting Preschool Children’s Early Writing with Self-Regulated Learning Strategies
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 25 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2019, Vol.13 No.2 5 69-93 (25 pages)
Research suggests that early writing is crucial in the development of young children’s literacy skills and links to their conventional literacy outcomes in elementary school and beyond. In order to enhance the will and the skills to express thoughts explicitly and effectively in early writing among preschool children, self-regulated learning (SRL) was suggested. This experimental study involved seventy-five preschool children, aged from five to six years old in Malaysia, aimed to investigate... -
Risk-Taking in the New Zealand Bush: Issues of Resilience and Wellbeing
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 23 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2018, Vol.12 No.2 2 7-29 (23 pages)
This article discusses a single case analysis of teacher-child interactions on an everyday bush walk in New Zealand. It uses a combination of the Leuven wellbeing scale (Laevers, 2000) and a conversation analysis approach to explore how children and teachers attend to specific features of the outdoor environment in a way that encourages risk-taking and builds resilience through problem solving. The collaborative achievement of the activities between the pre- school teacher and the fouryear- old... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2015, Vol.9 No.2 5 97-120 (24 pages)
This article reports on a phenomenological case study following one Korean-American child’s negotiation and development of racial-cultural identity in the United States during the first three years of school. This study aimed to closely explore, understand, and explain the critical incidents experienced by a Korean-American child to recognize and negotiate her racial-cultural identity, and the strategies she used to navigate through the school culture. As a result, four themes were identified... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 21 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.2 4 47-67 (21 pages)
The telling of fairytales has been a longstanding practice within the field of early childhood education in many communities across the Asia Pacific region. But what do we know about how educators use fairytales for the development of emotions for preschool aged children? In drawing upon culturalhistorical theory (Vygotsky, 1971, 1987, 1999), this paper presents the findings of a study into how fairytales were introduced to preschool aged children (n=30; from 3.3 to 5.3 years with mean age 4.2... -

in early childhood teacher education and school administration. Despite the different areas of diversities, they are united with one goal, that is, providing quality education for the benefit of children that meet their developmental needs. The Chinese concept of “He” or Harmony is instrumental in understanding “unity in diversity”. Harmony presupposes the existence of differences. Early childhood education in the Asian Pacific regions can be different and yet harmonious. By sharing latest... -
