Effects of Kanagawa Hemolysin on Blood Pressure and Arterial Tone in Rats
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.4 8 225-233 (9 pages)
Kanagawa hemolysin (KH), an exotoxin produced from Kanagawa phenomenon-positive Vibrio parahemolyticus, has been shown to possess various biological activities including hemolysis, enterotoxicity, cytotoxicity, and cardiotoxicity. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of KH on the cardiovascular system and its mechanism, employing in vivo and in vitro experiments of the rat. Intracerebroventricular (icv) administration of 100 mHU KH produced a marked and continuous pressor effect... -
A Role of Mitogen Activated Protein Kinases and Inflammatory Responses in Gender Differences in Kidney Ischemia Injury
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.3 5 155-160 (6 pages)
It is not known whether gender differences play a role in susceptibility to ischemic acute renal failure. Thus, we examined if there were any differences in susceptibility between male and female mice to kidney ischemic injury, and if so, whether it is due to differences in mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs) or inflammatory responses to ischemia. Female mice were protected against kidney ischemia when compared with males. Thirty minutes of bilateral ischemia resulted in marked functional... -
Effects of Central GABA and Glutamate on Blood Pressure and Single Unit Spikes in the RVLM of Rats
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.3 4 149-154 (6 pages)
present study, we examined the central effects of glutamate and GABA on the cardiovascular regulation by injection of these substances into the lateral ventricle and also investigated the relationship between these central effects and the action of angiotensin II (Ang). Male Sprague Dawley rats, 350∼400 g, were anesthetized with urethane and instrumented with an arterial catheter for direct measurement of BP and heart rate (HR), and an guide cannula in the lateral ventricle for drug injection.... -
Enhanced Expression of Aldosterone Synthase and Adrenomedullin in Left and Right Ventricular Hypertrophy in Rats
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.2 9 121-126 (6 pages)
The pathophysiological implications of aldosterone and adrenomedullin in the cardiac ventricular hypertrophy were examined. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-salt and monocrotaline (MCT) to selectively elicit left and right ventricular (LV, RV) hypertrophy, respectively. The mRNA expression of aldosterone synthase and adrenomedullin in LV and RV was determined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. The expression of aldosterone synthase... -
Noradrenergic Modulation of Spontaneous Inhibitory Postsynaptic Currents in the Hypothalamic Paraventricular Nucleus
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 10 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.2 2 71-80 (10 pages)
Previous studies have suggested that brain stem noradrenergic inputs differentially modulate neurons in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN). Here, we compared the effects of norepinephrine (NE) on spontaneous GABAergic inhibitory postsynaptic currents (sIPSCs) in identified PVN neurons using slice patch technique. In 17 of 18 type I neurons, NE (30∼100μM) reversibly decreased sIPSC frequency to 41⁑7% of the baseline value (4.4⁑0.8 Hz, p<0.001). This effect was blocked by yohimbine... -
Congenital LQT Syndromes From Gene to Torsade de Pointes
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.1 1 1-8 (8 pages)
Congenital Long QT syndrome (LQTs) is a relatively rare pathologic disorder but results frequently in sudden cardiac death. Of the six LQTs that have been clinically described, five have been worked out for their genetic and biophysical profile. Most are generated by mutations which cause a loss of function in two delayed Kcurrents, iKs and iKr. One syndrome is generated by mutations in the Na channel which causes essentially a gain of function in the channel. Clinically the... -
Forward-Mode Na+-Ca2+ Exchange during Depolarization in the Rat Ventricular Myocytes with High EGTA
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2001, Vol.5 No.6 5 487-494 (8 pages)
During depolarization, extrusion of Ca2 from sarcoplasmic reticulum through forward-mode Na-Ca2 exchange was studied in the rat ventricular myocytes patch-clamped in whole-cell configuration. In order to confine the Ca2 responses in a micro-domain by limiting the Ca2 diffusion time, rat ventricular myocytes were dialyzed with high (14 mM) EGTA. K current was suppressed by substituting KCl with 105 mM CsCl and 20 mM TEA in the pipette filling solution... -
Increased Expression of Nitric Oxide Synthases in Left and Right Ventricular Hypertrophy
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages

respectively. In 2K1C hypertensive rats, the expression of NOS mRNA was increased in parallel with its proteins in the left ventricle, but not in the right ventricle. In MCT-treated rats, the expression of NOS mRNA and proteins were proportionally increased in the right ventricle, but not in the left ventricle. These results suggest that the expression of NOS is specifically increased in association with the ventricular hypertrophy, which may be a mechanism counteracting the hypertrophy. -
Altered Delayed Rectifier K+ Current of Rabbit Coronary Arterial Myocytes in Isoproterenol-Induced Hypertrophy
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2001, Vol.5 No.1 5 33-40 (8 pages)
The aim of present study was to define the cellular mechanisms underlying changes in delayed rectifier K (KDR) channel function in isoproterenol-induced hypertrophy. It has been proposed that KDR channels play a role in regulation of vascular tone by limiting membrane depolarization in arterial smooth muscle cells. The alterations of the properties of coronary KDR channels have not been studied as a possible mechanism for impaired coronary reserve in cardiac hypertrophy. The present... -
Comparison of the Determinants in the Differences in Force- Frequency Relationships between Rat and Rabbit Left Atria
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2000, Vol.4 No.5 11 417-425 (9 pages)
The underlying mechanism commonly applicable for both the positive and negative force-frequency relationships (FFR) was pursued in left atria (LA) of rat and rabbit. The species differences in the roles of Na/Ca2 exchanger and sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), which are major intracellular Ca2 regulatory mechanisms in the heart, were examined in the amplitude accommodation to the frequency that changed from 3 Hz to the variable test frequencies for 5 minutes in the electrically...
