A Case Study of Bilingual and Monolingual Educators in Two Australian Early Childhood Settings
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 25 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2020, Vol.14 No.1 5 99-123 (25 pages)
One quarter of the Australian population is born overseas and one in five Australians speak a language other than English (ABS, 2016). This has led to an increase in the number of bilingual children enrolled in early childhood settings. Despite this changing landscape there is a lack of support for bilingual children enrolled in early childhood settings as many children do not receive any assistance to maintain their home language. This study examined the understanding and perceptions of two... -
Multiple Representations in Preschool Numeracy: Teaching a Lesson on More-or-Less
Alfredo Bautista, Malikka Habib, Raymond Ong, Anthony Eng, Rebecca Bull 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 28 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2019, Vol.13 No.2 6 95-122 (28 pages)
Mathematics education researchers and curriculum designers have emphasized the importance of representations in fostering students’ mathematical learning. However, most classroom-based studies on representations have focused on primary and secondary levels, and there is limited literature on how preschool teachers integrate representations in regular classroom activities. This qualitative study illustrates specific ways in which preschool educators may utilize multiple representations to teach... -
Supporting Preschool Children’s Early Writing with Self-Regulated Learning Strategies
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 25 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2019, Vol.13 No.2 5 69-93 (25 pages)
Research suggests that early writing is crucial in the development of young children’s literacy skills and links to their conventional literacy outcomes in elementary school and beyond. In order to enhance the will and the skills to express thoughts explicitly and effectively in early writing among preschool children, self-regulated learning (SRL) was suggested. This experimental study involved seventy-five preschool children, aged from five to six years old in Malaysia, aimed to investigate... -
The Role of Professional Development in Improving Quality and Supporting Child Outcomes in Early Education and Care
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 20 Pages

development and learning outcomes. This paper argues for more rigorous PD designs, considered evidence-based content and delivery that are embedded within a rich evidence-base of practice, and that focus on educator effectiveness, practice change, and also on the benefits to children’s learning and development. The paper draws upon effective PD literature and describes lessons learnt, focussing on the ‘who’, ‘what’ and ‘how’ of evaluation of effective in-service PD design and delivery. -
New Zealand Teachers’ Use of the Mat in Year 2 Classrooms
Anita Mortlock, Vanessa A. Green, Mary-Jane Shuker, Michael Johnston Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 18 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2019, Vol.13 No.2 2 21-38 (18 pages)
Despite its ubiquity in junior classrooms, the use of the mat as a pedagogical strategy is surprisingly under-researched. Little is known about when and how it is used, its purpose, and perceived learning outcomes. The current study included 296 anonymous responses from Year 2 teachers in New Zealand primary schools. Results showed that children spent between one and two hours on the mat each day, in blocks of 10-20 minutes. Perceived learning outcomes included social understanding and a sense... -
Problem Learners in Selected Elementary Schools in Ghana: Toward Understanding, Prevention and Action
Dickson Adom, Joshua Ebere Chukwuere, Atsu Dennis Dake, Jerry Pratt Newton 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 23 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2019, Vol.13 No.1 7 129-151 (23 pages)
in the classroom. The study was carried out using the convergent parallel mixed method design with questionnaire, focus group discussion, and one-on-one interviews as the data collection instruments. The purposive, convenient, and stratified random sampling techniques were used in selecting a total sample size of 112 participants consisting of identified problem learners, teachers, parents, heads of institutions, and experts in childhood learning and development. The quantitative data set were... -
“These are my camera glasses” : Wearable Digital Video Glasses for Recording and Examining Young Children’s Social Interactions
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 27 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2018, Vol.12 No.3 5 93-119 (27 pages)
As new technologies emerge and evolve, possibilities open up for their use in research. In this article, we consider wearable digital video glasses as a data collection tool in qualitative research involving child participants. We draw on data from a recording made during our pilot study of the ways young children’s social interactions produced learning opportunities during family shopping experiences. The recording was produced when the digital video glasses were worn by one six-year old boy... -
Preschool Inclusion Placement in Taiwan
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 23 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2018, Vol.12 No.3 4 69-91 (23 pages)
Despite the steady decline in birth rate in Taiwan, the number of special education children continues to increase, especially after the implementation of the Early Childhood Education and Care Act in 2012. The most significant increase was seen with placing special education preschoolers in inclusion classrooms. In particular, the number of students receiving itinerant services has grown the most dramatically, accompanied by a decrease in the number of students receiving special education... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 32 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2017, Vol.11 No.3 5 81-112 (32 pages)
This study explored the curriculum-related beliefs and practices reported by Singapore kindergarten teachers at a time when concerted efforts are being made to promote children’s holistic development through a child-centered curriculum that emphasizes active learning through play and interaction. A questionnaire was administered to a sample of 167 teachers of 4- to 5-year-olds. Factor analyses revealed three reliable factors for teachers’ beliefs and four factors for their classroom practices.... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 27 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.3 5 97-123 (27 pages)
In the context of ever-increasing presence of information communication technologies (ICT) in young children’s living and educational environments, early childhood education (ECE) policies and curriculum have begun to emphasise the importance of integrating ICT into early childhood practices and provide guidelines for the use of ICT in ECE settings. The current study aims to get a clearer picture of young children’s use of ICT in preschools and develop a better understanding of their...
