The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 4 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.5 2 231-234 (4 pages)
This study was designed to investigate the expression and production of interleukin-1beta (IL-1β) in human peripheral blood of trained runners and untrained controls after temporary moderate intensity exercise. Male long-distance trained runners (TR) and untrained sedentary control subjects (SED) ran for 1 h at 70% of heart rate reserve (HRR). IL-1β gene and protein expressions were significantly higher in TR than those with SED at all 3 intervals examined independently. Significant increases... -

The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.4 6 199-206 (8 pages)
The functional expression of potassium (K) channels has electrophysiologically been studied in bone cells from several species, however, their identity and regulation of gene expressions in bone cells are not well known. In the present study, to investigate how K channel expressions are regulated by estrogen, we measured changes of transcript levels of various Ca2-activated (KCa) and ATP-sensitive K channels in rat osteoblastic ROS 17/2.8 cells after treatment with... -

The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.2 2 65-70 (6 pages)
The present study was undertaken to explore the role of autonomic nerves in the regulation of sodium transporters and water channels in the salivary gland. Rats were denervated of their sympathetic or parasympathetic nerves to the submandibular gland. One week later, the expression of Na,K-ATPase, epithelial sodium channels (ENaC), and aquaporins (AQP) was examined in the denervated and contralateral glands. The sympathetic denervation slightly but significantly decreased the expression of α1... -
Effects of Zinc on Spontaneous Miniature GABA Release in Rat Hippocampal CA3 Pyramidal Neurons
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.2 1 59-64 (6 pages)
The effects of Zn2 on spontaneous glutamate and GABA release were tested in mechanically dissociated rat CA3 pyramidal neurons which retained functional presynaptic nerve terminals. The spontaneous miniature excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic currents (mEPSCs and mIPSCs, respectively) were pharmacologically isolated and recorded using whole-cell patch clamp technique under voltage-clamp conditions. Zn2 at a lower concentration (30μM) increased GABAergic mIPSC frequency without... -
Lysophosphatidylcholine Attenuates Endothelium-dependent Relaxation Responses through Inhibition of ACh-induced Endothelial [Ca2+]i Increase

The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.1 5 25-30 (6 pages)
Lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), which accumulates in atherosclerotic arteries, has been reported to inhibit endothelium-dependent relaxation (EDR) in many different species. However, the underlying mechanism of LPC-induced inhibition of EDR is still uncertain. In the present study, we measured simultaneously both isometric tension and cytosolic free Ca2 ([Ca2]i) in rabbit carotid strips, and examined the effect of LPC on tension and [Ca2]i. In carotid strips with... -
Metformin Enhances Leptin Sensitivity in Aged Rats

The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.1 1 1-6 (6 pages)
To evaluate whether metformin restores leptin sensitivity in aged rats with leptin resistance, we measured leptin sensitivity in aged (2 year old) and adult (5 month old) rats after 4 weeks of treatment with metformin (300 mg/kg/D, mixing in drinking water), by measuring food intake, body weight and visceral fat losing effects. Leptin (15μg/D) was administered by intracerobroventricular (i.c.v.) infusion through osmotic minipump for 1 week. Metformin treatment decreased body weight and daily... -
Calcium Ion Dynamics after Dexamethasone Treatment in Organotypic Cultured Hippocampal Slice
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2005, Vol.9 No.6 8 363-370 (8 pages)
It is imperative to analyse brain injuries directly in real time, so as to find effective therapeutic compounds to protect brain injuries by stress. We established a system which could elucidate the real time Ca2 dynamics in an organotypic cultured hippocampal slice by the insults of artificial stress hormone, dexamethasone. The real time Ca2 dynamics could continuously be detected in cornus ammonis 3 (CA3) of the organotypic hippocampus for 8 hours under confocal microscopy. When... -
Effects of Nitric Oxide on Inhibitory Receptors of Rod Bipolar Cells of Rat Retina
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2005, Vol.9 No.6 6 347-352 (6 pages)
The effects of nitric oxide (NO) on inhibitory neurotransmitter receptors and some types of inhibitory receptors in dissociated rod bipolar cell (RBC) were investigated. In the whole cell voltage-clamping mode, the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) activated current showed both sustained and transient components. GABA activated transient current was fully blocked by bicuculine, a GABAA receptor antagonist. The cis-4-aminocrotonic acid (CACA), a GABAC receptor agonist, evoked the sustained current... -

The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2005, Vol.9 No.6 5 341-346 (6 pages)
The mechanism underlying oxidant-induced intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) increase was studied in cultured bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAECs) using fura-2 AM. In the presence of 2 mM extracellular Ca2+, the application of DTBNP (20μM), a membrane-permeable oxidant, caused an increase in [Ca2+]i, and DTT (2 mM) as a reductant completely reversed the effect of DTBNP. The [Ca2+]i increase induced by DTBNP was also observed in an extracellular Ca2+-free/2 mM EGTA solution, indicating the release... -

B/K protein is a novel protein containing double C2-like domains. We examined the specific signaling pathway that regulates the transcription of B/K in PC12 cells. When the cells were treated with forskolin (50μM), B/K mRNA and protein levels were time-dependently decreased, reaching the lowest level at 3 or 4 hr, and thereafter returning to the control level. Chemicals such as dibutyryl-cAMP, cell- permeable cyclic AMP (cAMP) analogue and CGS21680, adenosine receptor A2A agonist, also...
