Dendrotoxin-ĸ suppresses tumor growth induced by human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells in nude mice
Soo Hwa Jang, Pan Dong Ryu, So Yeong Lee* 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 6 Pages
6 35-40 (6 pages)
Voltage-gated K (Kv) channels have been considered to be a regulator of membrane potential and neuronal excitability. Recently, accumulated evidence has indicated that several Kv channel subtypes contribute to the control of cell proliferation in various types of cells and are worth noting as potential emerging molecular targets of cancer therapy. In the present study, we investigated the effects of the Kv1.1-specific blocker, dendrotoxin-ĸ (DTX-ĸ), on tumor formation induced by the human lung... -
Conditional knockout of brca1/2 and p53 in mouse ovarian surface epithelium: Do they play a role in ovarian carcinogenesis?
Ki-Yon Kim, Dong Wook Park, Eui-Bae Jeung, Kyung-Chul Choi* 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 7 Pages
3 291-297 (7 pages)
Alterations of genes are known to be critical for the induction of tumorigenesis, but the mechanism of ovarian carcinogenesis is little understood and remains to be elucidated. In this study, we investigated the roles of brca1, brca2 and p53 genes in the development of ovarian cancer using conditional knockout mice generated by a Cre-loxP recombinant system. Following the application of recombinant adenovirus expressing Cre in vitro, the proliferation of ovarian surface epithelium (OSE) was... -

1 277-283 (7 pages)
Renal disease includes conditions affecting the glomeruli, tubules, interstitium, pelvis, and vasculature. Diseases of the kidney include glomerular diseases, diseases of the tubules and interstitium, diseases of renal pelvis, and developmental abnormalities. Renal tissue samples (n = 70) submitted to the Department of Veterinary Pathology of Konkuk University from 2003 to 2008 were included in this study. Tissue histopathology was performed using light microscopy with hematoxylin and eosin... -
Antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic effect of methanol extracts of Petasites japonicus Maxim leaves
Hwan-Goo Kang, Sang-Hee Jeong*, †, Joon-Hyoung Cho 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 8 Pages
8 51-58 (8 pages)
The methanol extract from the leaves of Petasites japonicus Maxim (PJ) was studied for its (anti-)mutagenic effect with the SOS chromotest and reverse mutation assay. The (anti-)carcinogenic effects were evaluated by the cytotoxicity on human cancer line cells and by the function and the expression of gap junctions in rat liver epithelial cell. PJ extracts significantly decreased spontaneous β-galactosidase activity and β-galactosidase activity induced by a mutagen, ICR, in Salmonella (S.)... -
Infrared spectroscopy characterization of normal and lung cancer cells originated from epithelium
So Yeong Lee, Kyong-Ah Yoon, Soo Hwa Jang, Erdene Ochir Ganbold, Dembereldorj Uuriintuya, Sang-Mo Shin, Pan Dong Ryu, Sang-Woo J 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 6 Pages
4 299-304 (6 pages)
The vibrational spectral differences of normal and lung cancer cells were studied for the development of effective cancer cell screening by means of attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy. The phosphate monoester symmetric stretching ns(PO3) band intensity at ∼970 cm and the phosphodiester symmetric stretching ns(PO2) band intensity at ∼1,085 cm in nucleic acids and phospholipids appeared to be significantly strengthened in lung cancer cells with respect to the other... -
The role of Bcl-xL and nuclear factor-kB in the effect of taxol on the viability of dendritic cells
Mi-Hyoung Kim, Hong-Gu Joo* 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 5 Pages
2 99-103 (5 pages)
Taxol has been used effectively in cancer therapies. Our previous study demonstrated that taxol induced altered maturation and improved viability of dendritic cells (DCs). However, the effects of taxol on DC viability have not been fully elucidated. In the present study, flow cytometric analyses revealed that taxol treatment significantly increased the number of viable DCs and the expression levels of a representative anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-xL. Furthermore, mobilization of the p65 subunit of... -

Heh-Myung Ghil, Jong-Hyeon Yoo, Woo-Sung Jung, Tae-Ho Chung, Hwa-Young Youn, Cheol-Yong Hwang* 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 6 Pages
10 67-72 (6 pages)
Discovery of Helicobacter (H.) pylori has led to a fundamental change in our understanding of gastric diseases in humans. Previous studies have found various Helicobacter spp. in dogs and cats, and pets have been questioned as a zoonotic carrier. The present study surveyed the Helicobacter infections and investigated the presence of H. felis and H. pylori infections in domestic and feral cats in Korea. Sixty-four domestic cats and 101 feral cats were selected from an animal shelter. Saliva and... -
Synergistic effect of ERK inhibition on tetrandrine-induced apoptosis in A549 human lung carcinoma cells
Hyun Sun Cho, Seung Hee Chang, Youn Sun Chung, Ji Young Shin, Sung Jin Park, Eun Sun Lee, Soon Kyung Hwang, Jung Taek Kwon, Aras 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 6 Pages
4 23-28 (6 pages)
of ERK using PD98059 synergistically enhanced the TET-induced apoptosis of A549 cells whereas the inhibition of Akt using LY294002 had a less significant effect. Taken together, our results suggest that TET: i) selectively inhibits the proliferation of lung cancer cells by blocking Akt activation and ii) increases apoptosis by inhibiting ERK. The treatment of lung cancers with TET may enhance the efficacy of chemotherapy and radiotherapy and increase the apoptotic potential of lung cancer cells. -

Chi-Ho Yu, Du-Na Hwang, Ji-Young Yhee, Jong-Hyuk Kim, Keum-Soon Im, Whan-Gook Nho, Young-Soo Lyoo, Jung-Hyang Sur* 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 7 Pages
1 1-7 (7 pages)
Primary testicular tumors are the most common causes of cancer in male dogs. Overall, the majority of canine patients should be cured by testicular surgery. However, tumor markers are not well-known in veterinary medicine. We sought to determine using immunohistochemistry whether the combined human testicular tumor markers (placental alkaline phosphatase, OCT3/4, CD30, alpha-fetoprotein, inhibin-alpha, vimentin, c-KIT, and desmin) are expressed in canine seminomas and Sertoli cell tumors (SCTs).... -

2 323-328 (6 pages)
Phosphorylation of caveolin-1 occurs during cell activation by various stimuli. In this study, the involvement of caveolin-1 in an irradiation injured spinal cord was examined by analyzing the phosphorylation of caveolin-1 in the spinal cord of rats after irradiation with a single dose of 15 Gray from a Co ■-ray source at 24 h post-irradiation (PI). A Western blot analysis showed that the phosphorylated form of caveolin-1 (p-caveolin-1) was expressed constitutively in the normal spinal cords...
