decreased the death activity of conditioned medium by 35%, suggesting that TNF-α play a partial role in the death activity. Boiling of medium almost completely abolished the death-inducing activity, suggesting that other heat labile death inducing proteins existed in conditioned medium. Taken together, these results indicate that SMC undergoing death could contribute to inflammation by expressing inflammatory cytokines and pathological complications by inducing death of neighboring cells. -
Morphine-induced Modulation of Nociceptive Spinal Dorsal Horn Neuronal Activities after Formalin-induced Inflammatory Pain

The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2005, Vol.9 No.2 2 77-86 (10 pages)
study, we examined the morphine-induced modulation of the nociceptive spinal dorsal horn neuronal activities before and after formalin-induced inflammatory pain. Intradermal injection of formalin induced time-dependent changes in the spontaneous activity of nociceptive dorsal horn neurons. In naïve cats before the injection of formalin, iontophoretically applied morphine attenuated the naturally and electrically evoked neuronal responses of dorsal horn neurons. However, neuronal responses... -
Higher Expression of TRPM7 Channels in Murine Mature B Lymphocytes than Immature Cells

a cation channel protein permeable to various metal ions such as Mg2, is ubiquitously expressed in variety of cells including lymphocytes. The activity of TRPM7 is tightly regulated by intracellular Mg2, thus named Mg2-inhibited cation (MIC) current, and its expression is known to be critical for the viability and proliferation of B lymphocytes. In this study, the level of MIC current was compared between immature (WEHI-231) and mature (Bal-17) B lymphocytes. In both cell... -
Acetylcholine Induces Hyperpolarization Mediated by Activation of K(Ca) Channels in Cultured Chick Myoblasts
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages

to do so. Since the activity of KCa channel is sensitive to intracellular Ca2 level, nAChR seems to be capable of inducing Ca2 influx. Using the Ca2 imaging analysis, we were able to provide direct evidence that ACh induced Ca2 influx from extracellular solution, which was dramatically increased by valinomycin-mediated hyperpolarization. In addition, ACh hyperpolarized the membrane potential from 12.5⁑3 to 31.2⁑5 mV by generating the outward... -
Differential Effects of Typical and Atypical Antipsychotics on MK- 801-induced EEG Changes in Rats
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2005, Vol.9 No.1 3 17-22 (6 pages)
We examined whether the abnormal EEG state by NMDA receptor blocker MK-801 can be reversed by typical and atypical antipsychotics differentially by comparing their spectral profiles after drug treatment in rats. The spectral profiles produced by typical antipsychotics chlorpromazine (5 mg/kg, i.p.) and haloperidol (0.5 mg/kg, i.p.) were differ from that by atypical antipsychotic clozapine (5 mg/kg, i.p.) in the rats treated with or without MK-801 treatment (0.2 mg/kg, i.p.) which produce... -

To investigate whether BF-7, extracted from Bombyx mori, improved learning and memory of ordinary people, Rey-Kim Memory Test was performed with placebo group (32 persons), 200 mg BF-7 treated group (33 persons) and 400 mg BF-7 treated group (34 persons). BF-7 enhanced significantly learning and memory function in a dose-dependent manner. To know how BF-7 plays such a positive role, we measured the concentration of acetylcholine in the brain from memory impairment animal model. Treatment of BF-7... -
Vibrio vulnificus Cytolysin Forms Anion-selective Pores on the CPAE Cells, a Pulmonary Endothelial Cell Line
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2004, Vol.8 No.5 4 259-264 (6 pages)
Cytolysin produced by Vibrio vulnificus has been incriminated as one of the important virulence determinants in V. vulnificus infection. Ion selectivity of cytolysin-induced pores was examined in a CPAE cell, a cell line of pulmonary endothelial cell, using inside-out patch clamp techniques. In symmetrical NaCl concentration (140 mM), intracellular or extracellular application of cytolysin formed ion-permeable pores with a single channel conductance of 37.5⁑4.0 pS. The pore currents were... -

The pelvic ganglia provide autonomic innervations to the various urogenital organs, such as the urinary bladder, prostate, and penis. It is well established that both sympathetic and parasympathetic synaptic transmissions in autonomic ganglia are mediated mainly by acetylcholine (ACh). Until now, however, the properties of ACh-induced currents and its receptors in pelvic ganglia have not clearly been elucidated. In the present study, biophysical characteristics and molecular nature of nicotinic... -
The Effect of Ghrelin on Ca2+ Concentration in Thyroid FRTL-5 Cells
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2004, Vol.8 No.4 4 195-200 (6 pages)
Ghrelin is a newly discovered peptide, which is released from the stomach and neurons in the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (ARC), and potently stimulates growth hormone release and food intake. In the present study, we investigated the effect of ghrelin on [Ca2]i in thyroid FRTL-5 cells. Ghrelin (5 nM) increased [Ca2]i and TSH (1 unit/l) had an additive effect on [Ca2]i when extracellular normal solution was 1.1mM Ca2 containing Coon's modified Ham's F12 medium. When... -
Effect of Amrinone, a Selective Inhibitor of Phosphodiesterase III, on PMNs-induced
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages

a specific inhibitor of phosphodiesterase 3, has an antioxidant activity against PMNs. Therefore, we hypothesized that amrinone could attenuate PMNs-induced cardiac dysfunction by suppression of reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced fby PMNs. In the present study, we examined the effects of amrinone on isolated ischemic (20 min) and reperfused (45 min) rat hearts perfused with PMNs. Amrinone at 25μM, given to hearts during the first 5 min of reperfusion, significantly improved coronary flow,...
