Conceptualisations of Parent Involvement in Early Childhood Education in China
Yan Li, Michel Vandenbroeck 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 24 Pages
환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2020, Vol.14 No.1 8 169-192 (24 pages)
There is a growing attention for parent involvement in education in general and in early childhood education in particular. The vast majority of scholarly literature is published in English language and originates from Western countries. There is a risk that this may lead to the assumption that mainstream ideas in international literature are globally valid and come to dominate those of other countries, despite cultural differences. We conducted a systematic review of Chinese literature on... -
Inclusive Education and Communication Impairment in Early Childhood: A Perspective from Japan
Stephanie Yagata 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 15 Pages
환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2019, Vol.13 No.3 2 9-23 (15 pages)
In this article I argue that notions from special education research in the West, such as individualized education and early intervention, are increasingly globally pervasive but may not be taken up in expected ways. I share a close read of an interview I conducted with a preschool director in Japan, exploring her perspectives on intervention for children with mild communication impairments. In an analysis of our conversation, I explore themes of purposeful restraint from intervention,... -
New Zealand Teachers’ Use of the Mat in Year 2 Classrooms
Anita Mortlock, Vanessa A. Green, Mary-Jane Shuker, Michael Johnston 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 18 Pages
환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2019, Vol.13 No.2 2 21-38 (18 pages)
Despite its ubiquity in junior classrooms, the use of the mat as a pedagogical strategy is surprisingly under-researched. Little is known about when and how it is used, its purpose, and perceived learning outcomes. The current study included 296 anonymous responses from Year 2 teachers in New Zealand primary schools. Results showed that children spent between one and two hours on the mat each day, in blocks of 10-20 minutes. Perceived learning outcomes included social understanding and a sense... -

was applied. Research found that problems of the divided system of kindergarten and child care center in Korea can be placed in three categories – inefficient administration governance, duplicated budget allocation and its inefficiency, and quality difference of early education and care for the same age group. Integration was started first by the Minister of the Ministry of Gender Equality (MOGE), Chi Eun-hee of the Kim Dae-jung government in 2003. The Roh Moo-hyun government moved child... -

Winston Kwame Abroampa, Williams Okunloye Rotimi, Joyce Nsiah Asante 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 18 Pages
환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2017, Vol.11 No.2 4 67-84 (18 pages)
The thrust of the study was to determine the extent to which sources of efficacy predicted and explained early childhood preservice teachers’ self-efficacy in Ghana. The study employed a survey design that selected 164 regular final year student teachers pursuing a Bachelor of Education degree in Early Childhood Education in two public universities in Ghana. The teacher self-efficacy scale and the sources of efficacy scale consisting of 60 items were used to gather data. Data was analysed using... -

and generating meaningful encounters and feelings of empowerment. The challenges were building trust, identifying experiences from imaginary stories, listening attentively, responding to difficult life situations of children, and addressing power distribution. The paper highlights the possibilities for promoting children’s inclusion and participation through ethically considered interviewing and seeing research process as a chance to give them experiences about competence, involvement and... -

환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.3 5 97-123 (27 pages)
In the context of ever-increasing presence of information communication technologies (ICT) in young children’s living and educational environments, early childhood education (ECE) policies and curriculum have begun to emphasise the importance of integrating ICT into early childhood practices and provide guidelines for the use of ICT in ECE settings. The current study aims to get a clearer picture of young children’s use of ICT in preschools and develop a better understanding of their... -

환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2015, Vol.9 No.2 1 1-21 (21 pages)
This paper discusses the methodological implications of using participatory research in the advocacy for better care and education services for children and families. The discussion uses the example of a national study undertaken in Singapore to show how participatory research used in collaboration with participants and commissioning body as key stakeholders can help to galvanise transformative change at the level of policy and provision. Eunae Son 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 22 Pages
환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.2 6 93-114 (22 pages)
This paper investigates how social competence, as a discourse, has been constructed in the field of early childhood education (hereafter ‘the field’) and how the conceptualization of social competence in academia has been applied to educational practices. Based on Bruner’s (1996) notions of folk psychology and folk pedagogy and Foucault’s notion of discourse (Foucault, 1972), I identify the cultural values and beliefs in the dominant discourses about raising “a socially competent child”,... -

Educational reforms are happening around the world and policy changes are commonly initiated by governments for political or economic reasons. Singapore government recognizes the importance of building a knowledge-based economy and is reflected in the continuous rounds of education policy development and reforms. Since 2003, the Singapore Ministry of Education’s policy change in relation to the preschool curriculum, have been geared towards more child-centred teaching with an emphasis on play....
