Research Notes : Mannitol Amendment as a Carbon Source in a Bean-based Formulation Enhances Biocontrol Efficacy of a 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol-producing Pseudomonas sp. NJ134 Against Tomato Fusarium Wilt
The Plant Pathology Journal 6 Pages
14 390-395 (6 pages)
Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum has become a serious problem world-wide and relies heavily on chemical fungicides. We selected Pseudomonas sp. NJ134 to develop an effective biocontrol strategy. This strain shows strong antagonistic activity against F. oxysporum. Biochemical analyses of ethyl-acetate extracts of NJ134 culture filtrates showed that 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (DAPG) was the major compound inhibiting in vitro growth of F. oxysporum. DAPG production was greatly enhanced in... -
Research Notes : Difference in Chemotype Composition of Fusarium graminearum Populations Isolated from Durum Wheat in Adjacent Areas Separated by the Apennines in Northern-Central Italy
The Plant Pathology Journal 6 Pages
8 354-359 (6 pages)
Chemotype composition of Fusarium graminearum strains, isolated from durum wheat kernels from naturally FHB infected fields in Northern and Central Italy, was investigated by multiplex PCR. The different climatic and environmental conditions of the two examined areas separated by the Apennines affected the composition of chemotypes. 15Ac-DON chemotype was predominant in both the sub areas. Nivalneol chemotype was more frequent in the warmer sub area. -
Research Articles : Evaluation and Verification of Barley Genotypes with Known Genes for Resistance to Barley yellow mosaic virus and Barley mild mosaic virus Under Field Conditions in South Korea
The Plant Pathology Journal 9 Pages
4 324-332 (9 pages)
Soil-borne barley yellow mosaic disease caused by Barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) or Barley mild mosaic virus (BaMMV) gives a serious threat to the winter barley cultivated in the southern regions in Korea. It is important to develop resistant varieties for stable and high-yield production. The objectives of this study were to evaluate 22 genotypes of exotic barley germplasms carrying the resistance genes rym1 through rym12, with the exception of rym10, and to determine the genes that confer... -
Effects of Heavy Metal Contamination from an Abandoned Mine on Tomato Growth and Root-knot Nematode Development
The Plant Pathology Journal 6 Pages
8 266-271 (6 pages)
Physicochemical characteristics and heavy metal content of soils located along the drainage way of an abandoned mine at Busan, Korea (35o31`N, 129o22`E) (contaminated soil; CS) and uncontaminated soils (50- 70 m apart from the drainage way) (NS) were examined. Growth of tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicom cv. Rutgers) in CS and NS, development of the root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) as root-knot gall formation on tomato plants, and non-parasitic nematode populations in soil were also... -
Suppression of Green and Blue Mold in Postharvest Mandarin Fruit by Treatment of Pantoea agglomerans 59-4
The Plant Pathology Journal 7 Pages
8 353-359 (7 pages)
In order to control postharvest spoilage of satsuma mandarin fruits, rhizobacteria were isolated from soil samples. The Pantoea agglomerans strain 59-4 (Pa 59-4) which suppresses the decay of mandarin fruit by green and blue mold, was tested for the control efficacy and its mode of action was investigated. Pa 59-4 inhibited infection by green and blue mold on wounded mandarins, which were artificially inoculated with a spore suspension of Penicillium digitatum and P. italicum with control... -
Occurrence of Burkholderia glumae on Rice and Field Crops in Korea
The Plant Pathology Journal 2 Pages
11 271-272 (2 pages)
Burkholderia glumae causes bacterial rice grain rot and bacterial wilt on many field crops. We developed a simple diagnostic streak method for the isolation of B. glumae from diseased plant material. The geographical distribution of 178 Korean isolates shows that B. glumae is widely spread in South Korea. -
Survey of Egg- and Cyst-parasitic Fungi of Potato Cyst Nematode in Indonesia
The Plant Pathology Journal 5 Pages
5 32-36 (5 pages)
Twelve fungal isolates out of 123 isolates obtained from cysts and soils of potato cyst nematode (PCN)-infested fields in Central Java, Indonesia had parasitic abilities of over 50% on PCN eggs or females (cysts) in vitro pathogenicity tests. Cultural and morphological characters and DNA sequences of ribosomal genes in ITS region revealed that they were four isolates of Gliocladium (Trichoderma) virens, three isolates of Fusarium oxysporum, one of F. lateritium, one of Penicillium tritinum and... -
Development of Diagnostic Technology of Xylella fastidiosa Using Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification and PCR Methods
7 Pages
6 38-44 (7 pages)
Xylella fastidiosa is the most damaging pathogen in many parts of the world. To increase diagnostic capability of X. fastidiosa in the field, the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay were developed to mqsA gene of citrate-synthase (XF 1535) X. fastidiosa and evaluated for speci- ficity and sensitivity. Both assays were more robust than current published tests for detection of X. fastidiosa when screened against 16 isolates representing the four... -

The casual agents of dieback were surveyed on 74 apple orchards that had been damaged nationwide in 2016–2019. The number of apple orchards affected alone by Phytophthora rot, violet root rot, and white root rot was 31, 34, and 3, respectively. Also, the total number of mixed infection orchards was 6. Out of 9,112 apple trees affected by dieback, the trees damaged by Phytophthora... -
Phytobiome as a Potential Factor in Nitrogen-Induced Susceptibility to the Rice Blast Disease
5 Pages
1 103-107 (5 pages)
Roles of nutrients in controlling plant diseases have been documented for a long time. Among the nutrients having impact on susceptibility/resistance to crop diseases, nitrogen is one of the most important nutrients for plant growth and development. In rice plants, excess nitrogen via fertilization in agricultural systems is known to increase susceptibility to the rice blast disease. Mechanisms underlying such phenomenon, despite its implication in yield and sustainable agriculture, have not...
