Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), derived from honeybee hives, is a bioactive compound with strong antioxidant activity. This study was designed to test the neuroprotective effect of CAPE in 3-nitropropionic acid (3NP)-induced striatal neurotoxicity, a chemical model of Huntington’s disease (HD). Initially, to test CAPE’s antioxidant activity, a 2,2’-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) antioxidant assay was employed, and CAPE showed a strong direct radicalscavenging eff... -

Ion channels in carcinoma and their roles in cell proliferation are drawing attention. Intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i)-dependent signaling affects the fate of cancer cells. Here we investigate the role of Ca2+-activated K+ channel (SK4) in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma cells (HNSCCs) of dif-ferent cell lines; SNU-1076, OSC-19 and HN5. Treatment with 1 μM ionomycin induced cell death in all the three cell lines. Whole-cell patch clamp study suggested common expressions of Ca2+-activated... -

Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease are a set of chronic, idiopathic, immunological and relapsing inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract referred to as inflammatory bowel disorder (IBD). Although the etiological factors involved in the perpetuation of IBD remain uncertain, development of various animal models provides new insights to unveil the onset and the progression of IBD. Various chemical-induced colitis models are widely used on laboratory scale. Furthermore, these... -
Advanced Glycation End Products and Diabetic Complications

During long standing hyperglycaemic state in diabetes mellitus, glucose forms covalent adducts with the plasma proteins through a non-enzymatic process known as glycation. Protein glycation and formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) play an important role in the pathogenesis of diabetic complications like retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy, cardiomyopathy along with some other diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis and aging. Glycation of proteins interferes with... -

Extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MF) have the ability to produce a variety of behavioral and physiological changes in animals. The stomach, as the most sensitive part of the neuroendocrine organ of the gastrointestinal tract, is crucial for the initiation of a full stress response against all harmful stress. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine whether ELF-MF stimuli induce changes in the activity of neuroendocrine cells, considering their involvement in endocrine or... -

of heparin in cultured cerebral endothelial cells (CECs), and found that heparin inhibited the tumor necrosis factor Ձ(TNFՁ)-induced and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-ՊB)-dependent expression of adhesion molecules, such as intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), which are crucial for inflammatory responses. Heparin selectively interfered with NF-ՊB DNA-binding activity in the nucleus, which is stimulated by TNFՁ. In... -
Nitric Oxide (NO) Inhibites the Neuronal Activities in the Rat Nucleus Tractus Solitarius

Nitric oxide (NO) system has been implicated in a wide range of physiological functions in the nervous system. However, the roleof NO in regulating the neural activity in the gustatory zone of nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) has not been established. The present study was aimed to investigate the role of NO in the gustatory NTS neurons. Sprague-Dawley rats, weighing about 50 g, were used. Whole cell patch recording and immunohistochemistry were done to determine the electrophysiological... -

active salt transport. Therefore, high water permeability in the salivary glands is expected to have a variety of aquaporin (AQP), a water channel. Although some AQPs have been known to be present in the salivary glands, roles of parasympathetic nerve in AQP expression have not yet been examined. This study was designed to examine the changes of AQPs and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) in the submandibular glands after parasympathetic denervation. Right chorda-lingual nerve was cut,... -

Membrane vesicles were prepared by differential centrifugation from epithelial cells of porcine trachea. Total activity of microsomal ATPases was measured spectrophotometrically by a coupled enzyme assay. The steady-state activity of the enzyme was 329±10 nmol/min mg protein. Thapsigargin, a specific antagonist of intracellular Ca2+-ATPase, inhibited about 50% of the activity, leaving 178±18 nmol/min .mg protein (n=6), indicating that the Ca2+-ATPase is one of the major microsomal ATPases....
