despite cultural differences. We conducted a systematic review of Chinese literature on parent involvement and analyzed underlying assumptions on rationales for parent involvement, on how parent involvement is configured, on guanxi and social inclusion, and eventually on the meaning of early childhood education. We found that while traditional important Chinese values are missing in dominant literature, there is also an increasing influence from U.S. literature on Chinese policy and practice. -

Berenice Nyland, Yang Gao, Zeng Xioadong, Josephine Ng 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 26 Pages
환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.3 4 71-96 (26 pages)
In recent years early childhood education has become a focus for ambitious reforms in China. The emphasis on early experiences in this study was designed to address issues of unequal life chances, that is, the opportunities that individuals have to improve their lives across the life span. Children in rural China are more likely to be educationally disadvantaged and lack of birth registration compounds this problem. This paper examines data from rural China that was designed to collect household... -

Akiko Hayashi, Joseph Tobin 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 13 Pages
환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.2 7 115-127 (13 pages)
Preschools in Japan, as elsewhere, are key sites of child development, socialization, and enculturation. A series of ethnographically informed studies of Japanese preschools have identified and explicated approaches to early childhood education that are very unlike those of preschools in other countries. Many of these features of Japanese preschools that have been identified by ethnographic researchers challenge Western notions of early childhood education and care and child development. These... -

The abstractness and indirectness of the MEXT approach to establishing curricular guidelines stands in stark contrast to the much more explicit and directive curriculum guidelines for early childhood education found in China, the US,... -
