Antitumor Effects of Camptothecin Combined with Conventional Anticancer Drugs on the Cervical and Uterine Squamous Cell Carcinoma Cell Line SiHa

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2009, Vol.13 No.2 7 115-122 (8 pages)
Functional defects in mitochondria are involved in the induction of cell death in cancer cells. We assessed the toxic effect of camptothecin against the human cervical and uterine tumor cell line SiHa with respect to the mitochondria-mediated cell death process, and examined the combined effect of camptothecin and anticancer drugs. Camptothecin caused apoptosis in SiHa cells by inducing mitochondrial membrane permeability changes that lead to the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential,... -
Oxidized Low-density Lipoprotein- and Lysophosphatidylcholine-induced Ca2+ Mobilization in Human Endothelial Cells

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2009, Vol.13 No.1 5 27-32 (6 pages)
The effects of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (OxLDL) and its major lipid constituent lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) on Ca2+ entry were investigated in cultured human umbilical endothelial cells (HUVECs) using fura-2 fluorescence and patch-clamp methods. OxLDL or LPC increased intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i), and the increase of [Ca2+]i by OxLDL or by LPC was inhibited by La3+ or heparin. LPC failed to increase [Ca2+]i in the presence of an antioxidant tempol. In addition,... -

acid derivatives (repaglinide) in regard to their long-term effect on ameliorating insulin sensitivity in OLETF rats. Each drug was dissolved and fed with drinking water from 29 weeks of age. On high glucose loading at 45 weeks of age, response of blood glucose recovery was the greatest in the group treated with glimepiride. On immunohistochemistry analysis for the Kir6.2 subunit of KATP channels, insulin receptor <FONT FACE="HJ중명조">Ղ-subunits, and glucose transporters (GLUT) type... -
Long-Term Tropical Residency Diminishes Central Sudomotor Sensitivities in Male Subjects

temperate native (TEMP) (Koreans). This experiment was conducted in a thermoneutral climatic chamber (24±0.5oC, 40±3% relative humidity). Heat loads were applied to each subject by the immersion of their lower legs in a hot water bath (43oC for 30 min). Sweat onset-time and sweat volume were compared between TROP and TEMP. The sweat onset-times on four selected points on the body ranged from 10.25 to 13.47 min in TEMP subjects, and from 16.24 to 17.83 min in TROP subjects (p<0.001).... -
Mechanical Hyperalgesia Induced by Blocking Calcium-activated Potassium Channels on Capsaicin-sensitive Afferent Fiber
KyungHeeLee, HongKeeShin 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 5 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2007, Vol.11 No.5 8 215-219 (5 pages)
Small and large conductance Ca2+-activated K+ (SKCa and BKCa) channels are implicated in the modulation of neuronal excitability. We investigated how changes in peripheral KCa channel activity affect mechanical sensitivity as well as the afferent fiber type responsible for KCa channel-induced mechanical sensitivity. Blockade of SKCa and BKCa channels induced a sustained decrease of mechanical threshold which was significantly attenuated by topical application of capsaicin onto afferent fiber and... -
Effects of Antioxidants on the Gamma-Radiation Damage of the Cultured Vascular Smooth Mucle Cells of Rat Aorta
Jong-DooLee, Hyoung-ChulChoi, Young-JinKang, Myung-SeKim, Kwang-YounLee 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2007, Vol.11 No.5 5 189-195 (7 pages)
To study the protective effects of antioxidants on the radiation damages of the cells, vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) from thoracic aorta of Sprague-Dawley rats were cultured and irradiated with gamma-ray. Cell viability was measured by direct cell counting and MTT assay, and flow cytometry was performed to measure fractional distributions of the cells. Gamma-ray irradiation inhibited cell proliferations accompanied with decreased G1 phase and increased S- and G2/M phases, and the maximum... -
Effects of Repeated Nicotine Treatment on the Changes in Glutamate Receptor Subunits Levels in Mesocorticolimbic Dopamine Areas
Kuem-JuLee, Dong-HoonKim, Song-HyenChoi, You-ChanShin, Sang-HaPark, Bo-HyunMoon, SeungWooKang, EujinCho, Sang-HyunChoi, Boe-GwunChun, Min- 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2007, Vol.11 No.4 1 139-144 (6 pages)
Recent studies suggest that alterations in glutamate receptor subunit levels in mesocorticolimbic dopamine areas could account for neural adaptations in response to psychostimulant drugs. Although many drugs of abuse induce changes in ionotropic glutamate receptor subunits in mesocorticolimbic dopamine areas, the changes of ionotropic glutamate receptor subunits by repeated nicotine treatment in these areas are not known. To answer this question, we injected male Sprague-Dawley rats twice daily... -

In this study, we investigated the therapeutic effects of a novel formulation of low-dose calcium and vitamin D3, blended with Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch and Eleutherococcus senticosus Max (RE), in postmenopausal women. The controls were given either a placebo or high dose calcium and vitamin D3 (CaD). Bone mineral density (BMD) in the L2-3 lumber spines and femur regions was assessed, and serum osteocalcin, bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP), and cross-linked N-telopeptide... -

number after the transfection played an important role in the sensitivity. The increase of passage number tended to increase the sensitivity of the cells up to 15. The media without phenol red showed a higher induction rate than with phenol red, suggesting the preferable use of phenol red-free media for the bioassay. Since each of the assays has unique characteristics that make them suitable for some screening applications and not others, development of sensitive bioanalytical methods based on a... -
NMDA Receptor-dependent Inhibition of Synaptic Transmission by Acute Ethanol Treatment in Rat Corticostriatal Slices

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.6 2 303-308 (6 pages)
The effects of ethanol on corticostriatal synaptic transmission were examined, using extracellular recording and analysis of population spike amplitudes in rat brain slices, to study how acute ethanol intoxication impairs striatal function. Ethanol caused a decrease in population spike amplitudes in a dose dependent manner (50∼200 mM). Pretreatment with picrotoxin, a γ-amino butyric acid (GABA)A receptor antagonist, increased the population spikes but ethanol (100 mM) was still effective in...
