by the treatment with mitochondrial respiratory chain inhibitors (rotenone and antimycin) hyperpolarized the resting membrane potential of parasympathetic neurons, which was not observed in sympathetic neurons. The hyperpolarizing response to metabolic inhibition was partially blocked by glibenclamide. RT-PCR analysis revealed that MPG neurons mainly expressed the KATP channel subunits of Kir6.2 and SUR1. Our results suggest that MPG neurons have KATP channels, mainly formed by Kir6.2 and SUR1,... -

Kanagawa hemolysin (KH), an exotoxin produced from Kanagawa phenomenon-positive Vibrio parahemolyticus, has been shown to possess various biological activities including hemolysis, enterotoxicity, cytotoxicity, and cardiotoxicity. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of KH on the cardiovascular system and its mechanism, employing in vivo and in vitro experiments of the rat. Intracerebroventricular (icv) administration of 100 mHU KH produced a marked and continuous pressor effect... -

The role of peripheral vestibular receptors in acute hypotension was investigated in anesthetized rats. Acute hypotension was induced by either intravenous infusion of sodium nitroprusside (SNP) or by experimental hemorrhage, and electrical activity and expression of cFos-like immunoreactive (cFL) protein were measured in the medial vestibular nuclei (MVN). Blood pressure decreased proportionately to the does of intravenous SNP and to the volume of the hemorrhage. Blood pressure decreased 10,... -
Differential Changes of ATP-sensitive Potassium Channel Current after Hypoxia-reperfusion Treatment in Mouse Neuroblastoma 2a (N2a) Cell

is one of the most serious problems. The openers of KATP channel have been suggested to have an effect to limit the ischemic damage. However, it is not yet clear how KATP channels of a cell correspond to hypoxic damage. To address the question, N2a cells were exposed to two different hypoxic conditions as follows: 6 hours hypoxia followed by 3 hours reperfusion and 12 hours hypoxia followed by 3 hours reperfusion. As the results, 6 hours hypoxic treatment increased glibenclamide- sensitive basal... -

basolateral membranes of polarized epithelial cells mediates the transepithelial HCO3 transport, which involves HCO3 absorption in the resting state and HCO3 secretion in the stimulated state. The overall process of HCO3 secretion can be divided into two steps. First, HCO3 in the blood enters the ductal epithelial cells across the basolateral membrane either by simple diffusion in the forms of CO2 and H2O or by the action of an Na-coupled transporter, a... -
Noradrenergic Modulation of Spontaneous Inhibitory Postsynaptic Currents in the Hypothalamic Paraventricular Nucleus

Previous studies have suggested that brain stem noradrenergic inputs differentially modulate neurons in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN). Here, we compared the effects of norepinephrine (NE) on spontaneous GABAergic inhibitory postsynaptic currents (sIPSCs) in identified PVN neurons using slice patch technique. In 17 of 18 type I neurons, NE (30∼100μM) reversibly decreased sIPSC frequency to 41⁑7% of the baseline value (4.4⁑0.8 Hz, p<0.001). This effect was blocked by yohimbine... -
Altered Electrophysiological Properties of Coronary Artery in Isoprenaline-Induced Cardiac Hypertrophy

An impaired smooth muscle cell (SMC) relaxation of coronary artery by alteration of K channels would be the most potential explanation for reduced coronary reserve in left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), however, this possibility has not been investigated. We performed morphometrical analysis of the coronary artery under electron microscopy and measured Ca2-activated K (KCa) currents and delayed rectifier K (Kdr) currents by whole-cell and inside-out patch-clamp technique in single... -
The Inhibitory Effect of Opioid on the Hyperpolarization-Activated Cation Currents in Rat Substantia Gelatinosa Neurons

The action of opioid on the hyperpolarization-activated cation current (Ih) in substantia gelatinosa neurons were investigated by using whole-cell voltage-clamp recording in rat spinal brain slices. Hyperpolarizing voltage steps revealed slowly activating currents in a subgroup of neurons. The half-maximal activation and the reversal potential of the current were compatible to neuronal Ih. DAMGO (1μM), a selective- opioid agonist, reduced the amplitude of Ih reversibly. This reduction was... -
Effects of Pretreatment of Serotonin Synthesis Inhibitor p-chlorophenylalanine on Lipopolysaccharide-induced Anorexia in Rats

In the present study, we investigated the effect of pretreatment of p-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA), inhibitor of serotonin synthesis, on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced anorexia in rats. First of all, effects of PCPA injection on food intake and body weight in rats were investigated. During 4 days of PCPA injection (300 mg/kg BW once a day), food intake was decreased by 33% and daily gain in body weight was inhibited compared with controls. Twenty-four hours after last PCPA injection, food... -
Pulse Exposure to Ethanol Augments Vascular Contractility Through Stress Response

Drinking excessive alcohol has been recognized as a risk factor for hypertension. However, the mechanism by which alcohol intake causes hypertension still remains elusive. We tested the hypothesis that ethanol itself acts as a stress factor on vasculature and indirectly modulates vascular contractility. After end of exposure to 1, 2.5 and 5% ethanol for 45 min, rat aortic strips were subjected to contractile responses, immunoblot for Hsp70 and the measurement of levels of myosin light chain...
