(JNK). However, the activation of ERK1/2 and p38 MAPK seemed to have no effect on the curcumin-induced autophagy, since both the conversion of LC3 protein and SQSTM1 degradation by curcumin was not changed in the presence of NAC. Taken together, our data suggest that curcumin induced ROS production, which resulted in autophagic activation and concomitant cell death in HCT116 human colon cancer cell. However, ROS-dependent activation of ERK1/2 and p38 MAPK, but not JNK, might not be involved in t... -
Curcumin Induces Downregulation of E2F4 Expression and Apoptotic Cell Death in HCT116 Human Colon Cancer Cells; Involvement of Reactive Oxygen Species
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2010, Vol.14 No.6 7 391-397 (7 pages)
E2F transcription factors and their target genes have been known to play an important role in cell growth control. We found that curcumin, a polyphenolic phytochemical isolated from the plant Curcuma longa, markedly suppressed E2F4 expression in HCT116 colon cancer cells. Hydrogen peroxide was also found to decrease E2F4 protein level, indicating the involvement of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in curucmin-induced downregulation of E2F4 expression. Involvement of ROS in E2F4 downregulation in... -
Testosterone Relaxes Rabbit Seminal Vesicle by Calcium Channel Inhibition

of these precontracted strips. Various K+ channel blockers, such as tetraethylammonium (TEA; 10 mM), iberiotoxin (0.1ՌM), 4-aminopyridine (4-AP, 10ՌM), or glibenclamide (10ՌM) rarely affected these relaxations. Single channel data (of inside-out and attached configurations) of BK channel activity were also hardly affected by testosterone (10ՌM). On the other hand, however, testosterone reduced L-type Ca2+ currents significantly, and found to induce acute relaxation of... -
The Effect of Ghrelin on Ca2+ Concentration in Thyroid FRTL-5 Cells
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2004, Vol.8 No.4 4 195-200 (6 pages)
Ghrelin is a newly discovered peptide, which is released from the stomach and neurons in the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (ARC), and potently stimulates growth hormone release and food intake. In the present study, we investigated the effect of ghrelin on [Ca2]i in thyroid FRTL-5 cells. Ghrelin (5 nM) increased [Ca2]i and TSH (1 unit/l) had an additive effect on [Ca2]i when extracellular normal solution was 1.1mM Ca2 containing Coon's modified Ham's F12 medium. When... -
Reduction of Muscarinic K+ Channel Activity by Transferrin in Ischemic Rat Atrial Myocytes
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages

It has been demonstrated that an unidentified cytosolic factor(s) reduces KACh channel function. Therefore, this study attempted to elucidate the cytosolic factor. Fresh cytosol isolated from normal heart (FC) depressed the KACh channel activity, but cytosol isolated from the ischemic hearts (IC) did not modulate the channel function. Electrophorectic analysis revealed that a protein of ∼80 kDa was markedly reduced or even lost in IC. By using peptide sequencing analysis and Western blot, this... -
Fuctional Relationship between Rate of Fatty Acid Oxidation and Carnitine Palmitoyl Transferase I Activity in Various Rat Tissues
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 4 Pages

Lipids play many structural and metabolic roles, and dietary fat has great impact on metabolism and health. Fatty acid oxidation rate is dependent on tissue types. However there has been no report on the relationship between the rate of fatty acid oxidation and carnitine transport system in outer mitochondrial membrane of many tissues. In this study, the rate of fatty acid oxidation and carnitine palmitoyltransferase(CPT) I activity in the carnitine transport system were measured to understand... -
Correlation between mEPSC Amplitude and Rise Time upon the Blockade of AMPA Receptor Desensitization at Hippocampal Synapses

opening is critical for the speed of transmitter release. In case of synapses, the slower the transmitter release, the smaller the size and rate-of-rise of postsynaptic responses would be expected if postsynaptic neurotransmitter receptors were not saturated. This prediction was tested at hippocampal synapses where postsynaptic AMPA-type glutamate receptors (AMPAR) were not generally saturated. Here, we found that the small miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents (mEPSCs) showed significantly... -
Role of Angiotensin II and Nitric Oxide in the Rat Paraventricular Nucleus
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2001, Vol.5 No.1 6 41-46 (6 pages)
To investigate the mutual relationship between angiotensin II (Ang II) and nitric oxide (NO) in paraventricular nucleus (PVN), Ang II receptor type Ia (AT1A), type Ib (AT1B), endothelial constitutive nitric oxide synthase (ecNOS), and neuronal constitutive nitric oxide synthase (ncNOS) mRNA levels of rat PVN were measured after unilateral carotid artery ligation. AT1A and AT1B mRNA levels were markedly elevated 6 hrs after unilateral carotid artery ligation. Losartan injection (10μg/0.3μl)... -
Effect of Panax ginseng on Latency of Passive Avoidance Response and Neuronal Damage of Hippocampus

The effects of crude saponin (SAP) and alkaloid (ALK) fractions of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer on the detrimental effects of electroconvulsive shock (ECS) and scopolamine on passive avoidance response (PAR) were studied in male Sprague-Dawley rats, referring their effects on the neuronal injury and plasticity of hippocampus in response to electrolytic lesion of left entorhinal cortex (ECL). The detrimental ECS effect on PAR was attenuated by pre- and post-treatments with SAP and ALK, respectively,... -
Neural Adaptation of Beta Adrenergic Receptor Subtypes after Chronic Imipramine Treatment A Quantitative Autoradiographic Study

(3H-DHA) in coronal sections of rat brain. Repeated treatment of rats with imipramine significantly reduced the binding of 3H-DHA to beta-1 AR in many brain areas, especially throughout the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, thalamus, and amygdala. Significant reductions of the binding of 3H-DHA to beta-2 AR were not found in any area of the brain. These data suggests that a selective down-regulation of beta-1 AR may be involved in the adaptive changes occurring after prolonged imipramine treatment.
