Microorganisms found in bioaerosols from animal confinement buildings not only foster the risk of spreading diseases among livestock buildings, but also pose health hazards to farm workers and nearby residents. This study identified the various microorganisms present in the air of swine, chicken, and cattle farms with different kinds of ventilation conditions in Korea. Microbial air samples were collected onto Petri dishes with bacterial or fungal growth media using a cascade impactor. Endotoxin... -
Molecular and phylogenetic analysis of Anaplasma spp. in sheep and goats from six provinces of China
Yan Zhang, Yali Lv, Feifei Zhang, Wenjing Zhang, Jinhong Wang, Yanyan Cui, Rongjun Wang, Fuchun Jian, Longxian Zhang, Changshen 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 7 Pages
대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 2016, 제 17권 제 4호 11 523-529 (7 pages)
Members of the genus Anaplasma are important emerging tick-borne pathogens in both humans and animals in tropical and subtropical areas. Here, we investigated the presence of Anaplasma spp. in 621 sheep and 710 goats from six provinces of China. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA sequencing were conducted to determine the prevalence of Anaplasma (A.) phagocytophilum, A. ovis and A. bovis targeting the 16S ribosomal RNA or the major surface protein 4 gene. PCR revealed Anaplasma in 39.0%... -
Mycobacterium vaccae induces a strong Th1 response that subsequently declines in C57BL/6 mice
Lijiao Zhang, Yanlong Jiang, Ziyin Cui, Wentao Yang, Limin Yue, Yingcong Ma, Shaohua Shi, Chunfang Wang, Chunfeng Wang, Aidong Q 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 9 Pages
대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 2016, 제 17권 제 4호 9 505-513 (9 pages)
Mycobacterium (M.) vaccae is a fast-growing species of saprophytic bacteria that is widely distributed. To understand the host immune responses induced by M. vaccae isolated from bovine submaxillary lymph nodes, C57BL/6 mice were infected with reference strain M. bovis Bacillus Calmette-Gu?rin (BCG) and isolated M. vaccae using intraperitoneal injections. Comparison of the bacterial replication and organ pathology between M. vaccae and M. bovis BCG revealed that M. vaccae was more malignant than... -
Genomic diversity of the Avian leukosis virus subgroup J gp85 gene in different organs of an infected chicken

ratios than those in the tumor-bearing liver and lungs. Additionally, the mutational sites of gp85 gene in the kidney were similar, and they differed from those in the liver and lung, implying that organ- or tissue-specific selective pressure had a greater influence on the evolution of ALV-J diversity. These results suggest that more ALV-J clones from different organs and tissues should be sequenced and compared to better understand viral evolution and molecular epidemiology in the field. -
Two clinical isolates of Mycoplasma hyosynoviae showed differing pattern of lameness and pathogen detection in experimentally challenged pigs

or intravenous inoculation, the proportion and distribution pattern of clinical cases was compared in addition to the severity of lameness. Tonsils were found to be the primary site of colonization, while bacteremia was rarely detected prior to the observation of clinical signs. Regardless of the clinical isolate, route of inoculation, or volume of inocula, histopathological alterations and tissue invasion were detected in multiple joints, indicating an apparent lack of specific joint tropism.... -
Toxicity of crude and detoxified Tityus serrulatus venom in anti-venom-producing sheep

Specific anti-venom used to treat scorpion envenomation is usually obtained from horses after hyperimmunization with crude scorpion venom. However, immunized animals often become ill because of the toxic effects of the immunogens used. This study was conducted to evaluate the toxic and immunogenic activities of crude and detoxified Tityus serrulatus (Ts) venom in sheep during the production of anti-scorpionic anti-venom. Sheep were categorized into three groups: G1, control, immunized with... -
Therapeutic effect of topical application of curcumin during treatment of radiation burns in a mini-pig model
Joongsun Kim, Sunhoo Park, Byung-Suk Jeon, Won-Seok Jang, Sun-Joo Lee, Yeonghoon Son, Kyung-Jin Rhim, Soong In Lee, Seung-Sook L 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 10 Pages

Curcumin protects the skin against radiation-induced epidermal damage and prevents morphological changes induced by irradiation skin, thereby maintaining the epidermal thickness and cell density of basal layers. In this study, the effects of topical curcumin treatment on radiation burns were evaluated in a mini-pig model. Histological and clinical changes were observed five weeks after radiation exposure to the back (Co gamma-radiation, 50 Gy). Curcumin was applied topically to irradiated skin... -

Bok Kyung Ku, Bo-Young Jeon, Jae Myung Kim, Young-Boo Jang, Yunho Jang, So Yoon Yu, Jiro Kim, Oun Kyung Moon, Suk Chan Jung, Min 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 3 Pages

Mycobacterium (M.) bovis causes tuberculosis and has a broad host range, including humans, livestock, and wild animals. M. bovis infection of wild boar has been reported in several European countries. We report here the first case of M. bovis infection in a domesticated wild sow in Korea. Granulomatous and necrotizing lesions with small numbers of acid-fast bacilli were observed in nodules of the lung of wild sow. Furthermore, the M. bovis isolate from the wild sow had spoligotype SB0140 and a... -
Establishment of hydrochloric acid/lipopolysaccharide-induced pelvic inflammatory disease model

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which is one of the most problematic complications experienced by women with sexually transmitted diseases, frequently causes secondary infections after reproductive abnormalities in veterinary animals. Although the uterus is self-protective, it becomes fragile during periods or pregnancy. To investigate PID, bacteria or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) extracted from gram negative bacteria has been used to induce the disease in several animal models. However, when LPS... -

대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 2016, 제 17권 제 3호 18 399-405 (7 pages)
This study was conducted to establish accurate baseline values of clinical laboratory data with regard to age-related changes in the Oriental white stork (Ciconia boyciana). In addition, the availability of an automated hematological cell counter was evaluated. A total of 94 clinically normal storks, including 64 young storks (<1 year old; 30 male and 34 female) and 30 adults (> 1 year old; 17 male and 13 female) were included. Hematological assays were performed using manual and automated...
