Microbial Population, Aflatoxin Contamination and Predominant Aspergillus Species in Korean Stored Rice
The Plant Pathology Journal 9 Pages
4 121-129 (9 pages)
rice type and sampling year. Although the fungal diversity was highly distinct from region to region, three Aspergillus isolates were predominant in the rice samples; thus, representative isolates AC317, AF57, and AF8 were selected and identified based on their morphological and molecular characteristics. Consequently, isolates AC317, AF57, and AF8 were identified as A. candidus, A. flavus, and A. fumigatus, respectively. These fungi can produce mycotoxins that are harmful for consumers and thus... -
Taxonomic Position of Korean Isolates of Rhizoctonia solani Based on RAPD and ITS Sequencing of Ribosomal DNA
The Plant Pathology Journal 7 Pages
12 83-89 (7 pages)
Taxonomic position of 46 Korean isolates of Rhizoctonia solani which were classified into nine intraspecific groups by anastomosis and cultural characteristics was analyzed by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and sequence analyses of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of ribosomal DNA. All the isolates within each group showed highly similar band patterns in RAPD. The ITS regions of the isolates within the same groups showed a high level of sequence similarity above 96.0%... -
Occurrence of Stunt Nematode, Tylenchorhynchus claytoni on Turfgrass in Korea
The Plant Pathology Journal 4 Pages
15 474-477 (4 pages)
in 2007, circular to irregular patches of stunted, chlorotic and wilted turfgrass var. Pencross were noticed in Jinhae, Gyeongnam province, Korea. Soil samples collected from those diseased patches of the golf course yielded high population (average 126 nematodes/ 100 cm3) of a stunt nematode, Tylenchorhynchus claytoni, which is described and illustrated in this paper with light and scanning electron micrographs. This is the first report on the occurrence of T. claytoni in turfgrass in Korea. -
A Bacterial Endophyte, Pseudomonas brassicacearum YC5480 Isolated from the Root of Artemisia sp. Producing Antifungal and Phytotoxic Compounds
The Plant Pathology Journal 8 Pages
13 461-468 (8 pages)
An endophytic bacterial strain YC5480 producing antifungal and phytotoxic compounds simultaneously was isolated from the surface sterilized root of Artemisia sp. collected at Jinju area, Korea. The bacterial strain was identified as a species of Pseudomonas brassicacearum based on its 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and physiological and biochemical characteristics. The seed germination and growth of monocot and dicot plants were inhibited by culture filtrate (1/10-strength Tryptic Soy Broth) of... -
Effect of Salinity, Temperature and Carbon Source on the Growth and Development of Sclerotia of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum Isolated from Semi-arid Environment
The Plant Pathology Journal 10 Pages
6 407-416 (10 pages)
Studies were conducted to determine the effects of temperature, solute potential and carbon source on the mycelial growth, sclerotia development, and apothecium production of an isolate of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. Mycelial growth rate was greatest at 25oC on potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium amended with up to 2% NaCl (ψs ≤ 1.91 MPa) and thereafter, growth rate declined. The least number of sclerotia were produced at 20oC on both PDA and malt extract agar (MEA) amended with 8% NaCl (ψs=6.62... -
Transgenic Rice Plants Expressing an Active Tobacco Mitogen-activated Protein Kinase Kinase Induce Multiple Defense Responses
The Plant Pathology Journal 9 Pages
2 375-383 (9 pages)
It is well known that NtMEK2, a tobacco MAPK kinase, is the upstream kinase of both salicylic acidinduced protein kinase and wound-induced protein kinase. In addition, expression of NtMEK2DD, a constitutively active mutant of NtMEK2, is known to induce multiple defense responses in tobacco. In this study, transgenic rice plants that contained an active or inactive mutant of NtMEK2 under the control of a steroid inducible promoter were generated and used to determine if a similar MAPK cascade is... -
Morphology and Molecular Characteristics of Alternaria sonchi Causing Brown Leaf Spot on Sonchus asper in Korea
8 Pages
3 107-114 (8 pages)
During a disease survey on weeds and minor cultivated crops in Korea, a brown leaf spot disease was ob- served on Sonchus asper. Leaf lesions were round or irregular in shape, and grayish brown to brown with a purple margin. In severe infection, lesions enlarged and coalesced, resulting in blighting of the leaves. The isolates from these leaf lesions were identified as Alternaira sonchi based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses of Internal transcribed spacer region,... -
Current Status and Future Prospects of White Root Rot Management in Pear Orchards: A Review
Shailesh S. Sawant, Eu Ddeum Choi, Janghoon Song, Ho-Jin Seo 한국식물병리학회 식물병연구 8 Pages

for farming, while ensuring the health and productivity of crops is increasing rapidly. Biocontrol agents are applied to crops to ensure biological control of plant pathogens. Research on the biological control of white root rot disease caused by a soil-borne pathogen, Rosellinia necatrix, is limited in pears compared to that in apple and avocado. This pathogenic fungus has an extensive host range, and symptoms of this disease include rotting of roots, yel- lowing and falling of leaves, wilting,... -

the disease versus the evaluated ecological factors. The soil pH, soil temperature, air temperature, and relative humidity depicted positive correlation of disease incidence and severity versus ecological factors at ρ=0.50 and ρ=0.60, ρ=0.20 and ρ=0.94, ρ=0.11 and ρ=0.812, ρ=0.05 and ρ=0.771 respectively while nitro- gen, phosphorus, and carbon depicted negative correlations at ρ=-0.22 and ρ=-0.58, ρ=-0.15 and ρ=-0.94, ρ=-0.19 and ρ=-0.12 respectively. In terms of host range, none...
