Phytophthora Rot of Broad Bean (Vicia faba) Caused by Phytophthoranicotianae in Korea
The Plant Pathology Journal 3 Pages
6 31-33 (3 pages)
in size. Optimum temperature for growth was about 28oC on potato dextrose agar. The disease occurred in all parts of the plant including roots, stems, leaves and pods in the field. The symptoms similar to those of naturally infected plants were induced by artificial inoculation and the pathogen was re-isolated from the plant. On the basis of mycological and pathological characteristics, the causal pathogen of broad bean rot was identified as Phytophthora nicotianae. This is the first report of... -
Phytophthora Rot on Luffa cylindrica Caused by Phytophthora nicotianae
The Plant Pathology Journal 4 Pages
2 211-214 (4 pages)
Oogonia and oospores were spherical, smooth walled, and measured as 20~28 μm and 16~24 μm, respectively. Oospores were aplerotic and antheridia were amphigynous, unicellula and spherical. Chlamydospores were globose and 20~38 μm in diameter. Optimum temperature for growth was around 28~30oC. The fungus caused similar symptoms on artificially inoculated plant and could be re-isolated thereby proving Koch`s postulation. Based on the mycological criteria investigated in this study, the causal... -
Note : Scab of Balsam Pear (Momordica charantia) Caused by Cladosporium cucumerinum in Korea

and 3~32×2~6 μm in size. The conidiophores were erected and had long branch, chains pale olivaceous brown in color and 6×280 μm in size. Ramoconidia were 10~34×3~8 μm in size. The fungus was identified as Cladosporium cucumerinum based on the morphological characteristics. The pathogenicity of the fungus was confirmed according to Koch`s postulate. The optimum temperature of the isolate was about 20oC. This is the first report on scab of balsam pear caused by C. cucumerinum in Korea. -
First Report of Anthracnose Caused by Colletotrichum acutatum on Begonia(Begonia semperflorens Link.) Nurseries
The Plant Pathology Journal 4 Pages
2 7-10 (4 pages)
identified as Colletotrichum acutatum on the basis of the mycological characteristics on potato dextrose agar and RAPD analysis. Pathogenicity of the fungus was also confirmed by artificial inoculation on healthy plants. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth of C. acutatum was around 25oC. The fungus was sensitive to azoxystrobin, bitertanol, diethofencarb-carbendazim, difenoconazole and tebuconazole. This is the first report on the anthracnose of begonia caused by C. acutatum in Korea. -
Fusarium Wilt of Winter Daphne (Daphne odora Thunb.) Caused by Fusarium oxysporum
The Plant Pathology Journal 4 Pages
4 102-105 (4 pages)
and its pathogenicity was confirmed by artificial inoculation on healthy plants. The fungus was identified as Fusarium oxysporum on the basis of the morphological and cultural characteristics on potato dextrose agar and carnation leaf agar. The optimum temperature for fungal growth was around 25oC and the fungal growth was inhibited by metconazole, triflumizole and trifloxystrobin on potato dextrose agar. This is the first report on the wilt disease of winter daphnes caused by F. oxysporum in... -
Phytophthora Rot on Sword Bean Caused by Phytophthora nicotianae
The Plant Pathology Journal 5 Pages
1 235-239 (5 pages)
smooth walled, and 22-30; Oospore- aplerotic, spherical, and 18-24; Antheridium- amphigynous, unicellula, and spherical; Chlamydospore- abundant, spherical, and 25-35; Sexuality- heterothallic, and A1 or A2; Optimum growth temperature- about 28˚C. The fungus showed strong pathogenicity to sword bean. Symptoms similar to those observed in the fields appeared 2 days and 4 days after inoculation with and without wound on pods. This is the first report of Phytophthora rot of sword bean in Korea. -
Sooty Mold of Persimmon(Diospyros kaki) Caused by Cladosporium cladosporioides
The Plant Pathology Journal 3 Pages
10 266-268 (3 pages)
hyphae was 1-2 μm. The mostly one-celled conidia were ovoid, lemon or cylinder in shape, blastophores, and sized 46-132 μm. Erected conidiophores were long-branched chains and their lengths varied from 24 to 346 μm with 2-5 μm width. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth was about 20˚C. Based on their mycological characteristics, the fungus was identified as Cladosporium cladosporioides. This is the first report in Korea of the sooty mold of persimmon caused by the said fungus. -
Pink Root of Onion Caused by Pyrenochaeta terrestris(syn.Phoma terrestris)
The Plant Pathology Journal 5 Pages
2 195-199 (5 pages)
was highest in alternating cycles of 12 hours near ultraviolet light and 12 hours in dark condition. Its morphological characteristics and pigment formation on water agar were identical with that of Pyrenochaeta terrestris. The optimum temperature for the growth of the fungus and disease development was 25-28˚C. When onion seeds were inoculated with the spore suspension, incubated in test-tube and sown in potted soil, disease symptoms developed in onion roots 7 and 30 days after inoculation. -
Corky Root of Tomato Caused by Prenochaeta Lycopersici in Korea

and 4.2-4.7´1.5-2.0 mm long. Optimum temperature for mycelial growth of the P. lycopersici isolates ranged from 20˚C to 25˚C. Fifteen isolates of P. lycopersici were tested for pathogenicity to susceptible and tolerant cultivars of tomato plants by artificial inoculation. Three isolates of P. lycopersici induced typical corky root discoloration on susceptible tomato cultivars but not on tolerant tomato. This is the first report in Korea of tomato corky root disease caused by P. lycopersici. -
Isolation and Identification of Colletotrichum musae from Imported Bananas
The Plant Pathology Journal 4 Pages
11 161-164 (4 pages)
Setae-like structures were not found either on the lesion or on the cultures. Sclerotia were also absent. Among the media, PDA medium was the best for mycelial growth. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth was 28℃, while the optimum pH ranged from pH 5.5 to 6.5. The isolates of C. musae caused black necrotic lesions on banana fruits by needle-wound inoculation, and orange-colored spore masses were produced on the lesions. The fungus also caused discoloration on apple fruits inoculated.
